About the Position:
Performs specialist engineering design work in order to support the construction and successful completion of network/operational/LIPA projects as part of the wider National Grid portfolio.
At the higher levels the role holder will take on more complex aspects of the design project as well as translating functional policy into working processes that will drive greater efficiencies for the project and the wider National Grid.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Work with Engineers and undertake specific tasks of varying complexity in order to support colleagues in other departments (e.g. Project Management, Operations, Overhead/Underground Lines, Public Works, substation Protection & Telecomm) in the design of technical solutions.
Independently collate and analyze design data using pre-determined tools, methods and formats in order to support the project or department’s decision making process.
Independently construct engineering design drawings, Bill of Materials, based upon engineering instructions, constructability meetings with installers, and order materials for specifically assigned projects.
Maintain a complete understanding of the engineering design CAD software, document management system, Material Procurement system.
Assist engineers in monitoring and/or assessing engineering and design working practices to ensure they are compliant with relevant regulations and revise standards as a result of recommendations by engineers and /or industry associations (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, etc.). (RM1)
Assist engineering during testing and evaluating the application of existing materials, equipment and new technologies and highlight areas for improvement in order to ensure they are robust. (CI1)
Ensure all designs follow applicable engineering deisgn standards such as NEC, NESC, etc. and are used appropriately and according to instructions in order to ensure compliance with safety criteria and the design is in line with National Grid & LIPA policies and processes. (SF1)
In conjunction with engineers, develop and maintain systems, models and procedures in order to support design solutions and enhance efficiency and operability.
Research primary data sources and select relevant information in order to enable analysis of key themes and trends.
Evaluate the application and use of materials and new technologies to look for time saving and other efficiency savings on the designated project.
Assist engineers by monitoring and challenge business processes in order to ensure National Grid is compliant with industry associations (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, etc.).
Manage the day to day relationship with relevant customers/business areas in order to understand their requirements and deliver appropriate solutions, in line with National Grid policies and processes.
Challenge existing ways of working and continuously seek ways to do things better in order to drive greater efficiencies within assigned area.
Knowledge & Experience Required:
Associates’s degree in Electrical Technology or equivalent plus a minimum of 2 year’s related engineering and/or design experience is preferred.
Technically proficient within engineering design and analysis.
Strong Knowledge of Microstation, the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC) and other related guidelines related to engineering, design and operation.
Working knowledge of Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) guidelines.
Must have a good working knowledge of tools and systems within designated area.
Experience of using project management systems in order to understand and analyze data.
Possesses theoretical knowledge and understanding of National Grid’s policies and processes and how to apply them effectively.
Uses direct persuasion to influence others, using basic data and engineering designs/drawings.
Reviews accuracy of own work/designs and checks that all details are completed to standards, procedures , and specifications and can be used by others.
Sees multiple relationships, identifying several likely causes or consequences of a situation and the impact this will have upon engineering design concepts and construction work.
Sees patterns or trends in data or situations, notices when something is similar to a past situation and can be replicated in another part of the business
