Position Description

The Sr. Art Director – Digital is responsible for translating complex consumer and business needs into simple and elegant design solutions that are industry-leading and brand-defining. He/she will drive collaboration, develop solutions, and make recommendations based on experience, user research, corporate strategy, client input, and industry best practices.

• Create intuitive and elegant design solutions while acting as creative lead for projects that solve complex consumer problems and drive business results
• Impeccable design skills and aesthetic sensibilities
• Strong leadership skills for supporting the development of multiple small- and large-scale projects and campaigns
• Communicate solutions to stakeholders in a manner that simplifies complexity and generates excitement
• Lead/facilitate collaboration with Copywriters, Product Managers, Designers, Analysts, and Developers throughout the discovery, design, and development process
• Create concepts to articulate, inform, and validate ideas with consumers and stakeholders (prototypes, wireframes, sketches, journey maps, personas, etc.)
• Stay current on all the tools, principles, and practices in user-centered design and development, and drive for continuous improvement
• Mentor junior designers on industry and CarMax best practices
• Advocate for high standards of excellence in providing delightful and rewarding user experiences
• Work with leadership to review concepts and produce multiple executions that maintain consistent CarMax brand messages.
• Prepare creative artwork for production/delivery to client or third-party vendor.

Position Requirements

• Passion for technology and design, and the drive to stay on top of industry trends and best practices
• Persuasive communicator – able to explain complex or intangible concepts to stakeholders at all levels
• Good listener – weighs input from multiple perspectives when forming opinions and recommendations
• Collaborative and team-oriented work approach
• Solid understanding of design processes and ability to balance customer needs with business goals in developing solutions
• Ability to convert ideas quickly into concepts/prototypes
• Ability to perform design critiques and supply objective feedback to designers
• Strong critical thinking and analysis skills
• Strong knowledge of graphic design including typography, color, concept, and layout
• Experience designing solutions for web, mobile, and print
• Ability to build and maintain strong relationships

• Four-year college degree (Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Marketing, Communication, Graphic Design, Digital/Web Design, etc.)
• 5 or more years of creative design experience preferred in an agency or in-house creative department
• Portfolio or work samples showcasing creativity and depth of thought coupled with fluency in best practices for Graphic Design/Art Direction

• Have an advanced understanding of:
• Adobe Creative Suite
• Motion Design (animation, etc.)
• Google Web Designer
• Experience in digital advertising and email/web design is a plus
• User Interface/User Experience design experience a plus
• Design principles
• Prototyping methods and tools
• Web technology
• User-centered design process
• Presentation methods
• Collaboration techniques
