Job Purpose:
The Chief Solution Architect is responsible for the development and the maintenance of the Solution Architecture work products within the overall US Gas Business Enablement program and the governance of projects against the program’s Solution Architecture. The Chief Solution Architect also provides consultancy within National Grid on the interpretation and application of this Solution Architecture.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
Ensuring alignment of the program solution architecture to the US Gas Business Enablement Program Strategy.
Ensuring that program level Architecture Governance and Solution Design Authorities are in place and working.
Communicating the Solution Architecture to the business and the IS functions.
Technical management of the Architecture work products.
Accountable for the Architecture overview Work Products.
Operation and oversight of the Architecture Conformance Process for IS projects within the program.
Ensuring the effective retention and sharing of knowledge, and reuse of components, across the program.
Alignment with and influence of the Global Enterprise Architecture.

Knowledge & Experience Required:
Educated to degree level in Computer Science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Experience applying standard architectures and patterns within solution designs.
Experience developing Solution Architectures..
Knowledge of basic networking concepts and design practices.
Knowledge of various hosting environments and platforms.
Knowledge of basic integration techniques.
Knowledge of database design and database management systems.
Minimum of 5 years of software development and/or support experience at an enterprise level.
Familiarity with Software Development Lifecycle Management techniques.
Experience in product and vendor evaluation and technology rollout.
Good written and verbal communications skills.
Good stakeholder management and influencing skills at project stakeholder level.
Ability to multi-task.
Desired Skills:
Relevant industry certification (e.g.TOGAF) desirable.
Knowledge of business analysis techniques, tools and requirements gathering.
Knowledge of basic networking concepts and design practices.
Knowledge of various hosting environments and platforms.
Job Dimensions:
Program-wide span of responsibility, with team members in the US.
Up to ten direct reports.
Up to twenty additional indirect reports.
Additional “dotted line” reports from other architecture functions (Digital Risk & Security, Enterprise Architecture, Solution Delivery).
Influence over program implementation plan expenditure of the order of $250M+ and dozens of implementation projects.
Main Interfaces:
With US Gas Business Enablement program leadership to communicate and agree architectural direction and decisions.
With Strategy Consultants to develop the future architecture vision and roadmap and to influence the investment plan.
With the program’s office of the PMO for the operation of the governance process for projects against the solution architecture.
With Solution Architects (internal and from IS partners) to provide technical direction through the operation of various program level Solution Design Authorities.
