As a Data Scientist at National Grid you will define and build market models, test new products and services, mine big data to better understand customers and their energy habits, be the catalyst of process reengineering through advanced analytics. About the Position:
The National Grid Data Science teams provide insights and conclusions from multiple sources of information in a variety of different formats using analysis techniques that range from the simple to the advanced. An ability to work cross functionally and on Agile teams is critical and you should have a broad based knowledge of:
Statistical & Probabilistic Analyses
Effective Visualization and Presentation
Holistic Problem Engineering
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Identify, extract, and integrate data sets ranging in size from spreadsheets to big data
Discover the best methods of integrating data from several different sources and formats for use in analyses
Employ sophisticated analytics programs, machine learning, and statistical methods to prepare data for use in predictive and prescriptive modeling
Prepare and clean data for use in advanced analysis
Explore new data sources and determine how best to use the data in advanced analyses
Be intellectually curious and enjoy learning
Communicate and liaise between the Technical, Process, and Business Teams to ensure solutions and conclusions are based on real data
Drive groundbreaking change in moving the company to a data-driven decision making business
Knowledge & Experience Required:
3+ years of experience in business environment as a data scientist/business analyst/quantitative analyst
Master?s degree in a quantitative discipline (Engineering, Sciences, Economics, Finance, Computer Science, or equivalent), extraordinary candidates considered with Bachelor?s or Master?s in progress Can describe machine learning tools and techniques (supervised and un-supervised) to a non-technical audience
Python and/or R
Can query, clean, and merge datasets from various sources
Strong Statistical and Mathematical background is required:
Math (e.g., linear algebra, calculus, and probability)
Statistics (e.g., hypothesis testing, descriptive statistics, etc.)
Experimental Design experience
Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with business and technical competencies without supervision
Demonstrated ability to translate extremely technical knowledge into business terms
Demonstrated ability to design and build communication tools that can ?tell the story? in a manner that relates to:
How to use findings and conclusions
Experience leading projects and/or teams
Demonstrated ability to utilize Data Mining techniques to segment/classify customers, predict likelihood of product adoption, and profile customer base from not only an algorithmic standpoint, but a conclusion and insight drawing perspective, from tools and data that do not lend themselves to algorithmic solutions is required
Experimental Design experience
Ability to learn multiple programming languages/database engines in addition to those required above for the purposes of analyzing and using data; not software development.
Ability to learn geospatial analysis
Working experience in a utility/energy industry
Active github repository and stackoverflow account
Data science competition entries (kaggle, kdnuggets, etc.)
Big data framework, e.g.:
Strong Business Analytics background:
Cost Benefit Analysis
Additional preference would be given if you hold a PhD degree in a quantitative discipline.
