About the Position:
National Grid, one of the largest investor-owned companies in the world covering Massachusetts,New Hampshire,New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and the UK is seeking a zoning attorney for it's Legal Department in Waltham,Massachusetts. The siting andpermitting teams play an integral role in the successful delivery of a largeportfolio of complex projects in New England.The permitting attorney?s responsibilities willinclude permitting gas and electric infrastructure projects before municipalboards, including zoning boards of appeal, planning boards, boards of selectmenand city councils. The successfulcandidate will have a minimum of three years? experience in zoning and general permitting and a background in managing project teams andworking collaboratively with municipalities.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Preparingpermitting analyses and securing permits and approvals for gas and electricinfrastructure projects in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island
Providing review and recommendations onpermitting-related terms and conditions of business agreements
Exercisingindependent judgment on legal matters and counseling middle or upper managementclients.
Identifying business issues and initiatives where significant risks have notbeen taken into account in order to mitigate risk for the business.
Providing support and coaching to less experiencedlawyers and paralegals in order to share knowledge and develop technicalunderstanding within discipline.
Ensuringall projects are appropriately assessed, designed, planned, resourced andscheduled in a timely and cost
effectivemanner in order to ensure best value for National Grid and its customers.
Developing and utilizing peer group network in orderto absorb and apply legal, market and regulatory best practice within own areaof specialism.
Challenging existing processes and continuouslyseeking ways to do things better in order to drive greater efficiencies for thebusiness
Knowledge & Experience Required:
A Juris Doctor Degree.
Admission to and in good standing in MA Bar. RI, NH or VT bar admission a plus.
Legal experience, skills and judgment of an attorney with five or more years practicing law in the area of siting and permitting
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders and regulators
Experience in conducting administrative and zoning hearings
Ability to think from first principles rather than being solely guided by pre-determined processes.
Detailed knowledge and understanding of legal precedent, statutory, regulatory and legislative issues affecting the industry and permitting of utility infrastructure.
Ability to think from first principles and demonstrates ability to challenge processes and use knowledge or trends to look at current situations.
Ability to conduct legal research.
Exhibits high personal standards of commitment and integrity.
Ability to bring creative and innovative legal approaches for the benefit of the business client.
Ability to establish high level confidence with middle and upper management, business clients and external stakeholders.
Ability to manage intermediate legal matters efficiently and effectively.
