National Grid is currently looking to hire a full-time regular position in the Capital Delivery Electric Construction Organization for the In-House Construction Substation Division.
About the Position:
The Internal Substation Construction Manager works, under the direction of the Director of Capital Delivery Construction Electric, is responsible for overseeing assigned contract work and coordinating the daily activities of assigned civil or Electrical contractor crews. This position must ensure high standards of safety, security, environmental compliance, as well as uninterrupted service is being delivered to customers in a timely and professional manner consistent with company and regulatory requirements.
Manage approximately 10 - 20 internal Substation Construction Supervisors and contractor crews if needed.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Manage assigned department personnel to ensure that Construction projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in a high-quality manner to meet company and regulatory guidelines.
Ensure that high standards of safety, security and environmental compliance are consistently followed at assigned work locations.
Fully understand the assigned project scope. Interface with others on the project to ensure job commitments are delivered on time and within budget.
Ensure safe and reliable Construction and maintenance activities consistent with company, objectives and policies, in full compliance with existing and relevant emerging government codes and regulations.
Ensure company guidelines and procedures, standards, and environmental and safety regulations are consistently adhered to. Ensure compliance to all applicable Federal, State, Local and National Grid guidelines, laws and regulations.
Provide quality assurance that the work being performed is per National Grid specifications, standards and applicable contractual documents.
Plan and organize daily operations of Construction workforce.
Assure that assigned personnel are productively assigned to the highest priority work, trained and evaluated within company guidelines and procedures. Conduct worker performance appraisals and provide developmental plans.
Assure that required vehicles, equipment, materials and tools used by personnel are available and maintained at proper levels.
Assure that high standards of safety, security and environmental compliance are developed, met and maintained at the work sites.
Assure that required paperwork is accurate and submitted on time (e.g. drivers logs, vehicle inspection reports, crane inspection reports, job briefings, tailboard discussion check sheets, time sheets, etc.).
Effectively oversee through field supervision a high level of worker productivity under a variety of site work conditions.
Understand and interpret the union labor agreement to assure uninterrupted and safe workflow.
Review labor estimates and material costs for proposed substations project work. Assist with soliciting quotes from vendors and contractors as periodically needed.
Prepare and present periodic oral and written reports regarding work assignments and Construction progress including variances and change orders.
Provide assistance and oversight with field Construction coordination as may be required for contractors performing Construction of Electrical substations.
Maintain a thorough understanding of department emergency response procedures to help arrange and provide resource support as needed. Remain available to be contacted, by phone in the event of a system emergency.
Participate in project call-ins, meetings, and work projects per PM?s process.
Knowledge & Experience Required:
Minimum Two-year technical degree in civil or Electrical engineering or equivalent experience.
10-15 years relevant civil or Electrical Construction experience in all aspects of electric utility operations, Conduit/duct bank utility Construction operations or similar industry.
Strong knowledge of Federal, State, OSHA, local, company safety and environmental rules and regulations.
Ability to read and interpret job cards, prints, specifications, drawings, schematics, one line diagrams, instructional information and contract documents.
Must have thorough understanding of civil or Electrical Construction principles and the hazards associated with civil work; and possess good Electrical aptitude.
Ability to develop a working knowledge of company maintenance practices, safe work practices, tagging rules and labor contracts.
Ability to develop and administer a strong Safety culture.
Hands-on experience with completion of challenging field Construction work.
Maintain a non-restricted driver's license.
Able to travel throughout the service territory and willing to work extended hours when job requires and for system emergencies.
Journeyman Electrician License in a state within our service territory preferred.
