About the Position:
Reporting to the VP, US Strategy and Technology, the Director of US Strategy will work closely with the Global Strategy team and the US leadership team to facilitate, lead and coordinate the development of Strategy positions for the US Business. In addition, this role will be responsible for working closely with the UK based Group & UK/EU Strategy to collaborate on developing corporate Strategy and support global strategic projects. The successful candidate will become a trusted partner to the Business and their market/Business insights and thought leadership in Strategy will be welcome and sought after.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
As a member of the US Strategy team and working closely with the Global and UK Strategy team, the successful candidate will:
Participate in the development and review of US Business Strategy and annual strategic agenda to provide the US leadership team with appropriate context for medium and long term Business decision-making. Understand and support the US implementation of Line of Sight, National Grid?s tool for aligning Strategy, Business objectives and individual goals.
Work with key US Business stakeholders to develop and gain alignment on Strategy positions in support of National Grid?s US regulatory and growth policy. As there is significant level of strategic expertise in specific Business areas, success in this position will require a high degree of emotional intelligence and excellent facilitation and influencing skills.
In collaboration with the Global Strategy team, lead development and standardization of best practice Strategy research, analysis and presentation tools and techniques to produce high quality, CEO-ready outputs. Coach relevant team-members on Strategy best practices and tools.
Through deep knowledge of the energy industry, become a thought leader on emerging challenges in the US energy market to identify technology, economic, regulatory and Business trends and their impact on the industry and company.
In collaboration with the Global Strategy team, institute and manage a market scanning and benchmarking process to gain Strategy and technology trends and leading indicators across the industry and broader environment. Lead content development for a quarterly market intelligence update to be shared with senior US leadership and contribute to the Global Updates.
Support Business development and M&A work streams by providing relevant market/company insights and preliminary financial analysis for potential growth options.
Knowledge & Experience Required:
Undergraduate degree required, graduate degree preferred.
Recognized specialized Strategy based training (ex. Strategy Practitioner) preferred.
Extensive (10+ years) experience in leadership of Strategy development and formulation in large/complex environments, either in a consulting organization or a corporate environment. Demonstrated experience in leadership of Strategy projects and proven ability to work with and influence senior leaders in an organization.
Demonstrated knowledge, use and ability to develop and institute ?best practice? Strategy tools for research, analysis and presentations.
Advanced strategic thinking and analytical skills required, understanding of corporate finance, strategic and Business planning desired.
Effective leadership, communication and influencing skills are necessary for success in this role:
Ability to appropriately tailor communication styles (both verbal and written) to convey complex/ambiguous concepts to a wide range of audiences.
Ability to influence decision-making is critical to bringing complex issues to successful conclusion.
Demonstrated ability to constructively influence decisions and collaboratively evolve the status quo, requiring situational adaptability to act as a leader, a facilitator and a participant.
Experience and understanding of the US energy sector, regulatory/technology/Business issues impacting the industry and future trends is highly desirable.The optimal candidate will have industry experience and extensive Strategy leadership experience.
Comfortable working in a matrix organization and effectively engaging with multiple stakeholders at various levels in the organization.
