National Grid is offering an intense Leadership Development Program for top MBA graduates. The 18-24 month program is designed to expose Leadership Development Program (LDP) hires to the broad range of activities across our functions and jurisdictions, work on a variety of projects, and expand their business network. After completion of the program, LDP hires will move into a direct management, program management, or strategy development role based on their interests and the organization’s needs.
The program starts with an orientation period in which each new hire will get exposure to aspects of National Grid’s core business operations. Program participants will then undertake three 6-8 month rotations that expose the new hire to the full scope of the organization.
These rotations will be tailored to the new hire’s interests, and participating groups may include (but are not limited to):
The Market Development team focuses on building and managing strong, effective sustainability-related services. The work is highly collaborative and team members coordinate internally and with external stakeholders, including National Grid business partners, state regulators, community leaders, and industry representatives. The team engages with these stakeholders to develop a long-term vision for the energy future including meeting the energy efficiency and demand side management needs of various customer segments. Strategies are brought to fruition by working across other teams at National Grid to implement and market approaches to meet these needs.
Team members oversee and consult on a variety of qualitative and quantitative research studies to measure and verify observed energy efficacy savings. They must also clearly summarize and disseminate their findings to regulatory stakeholders and National Grid teams.
New Energy Solutions
The New Energy Solutions Joint Venture group is responsible for developing strategies for residential and commercial customers to address existing gaps in the Energy Efficiency, Alternative Fuel Vehicles, Grid Modernization and Distributed Generation programs through partnerships and alliances. The Program Manager position will be responsible for managing existing partnerships as well as developing new customer solutions in partnerships with market participants.
Business Process and Performance
This role involves working across both the management and frontline teams to support the development and implementation of National’s Grid Performance Excellence (PEx) Strategy. The candidate will support teams with PEx training and coaching, and ensure that this methodology is established and developed within National Grid’s Organization.
The role will include managing and facilitating operational teams on Lean projects that improve organization effectiveness and customer responsiveness. Responsibilities include: Coaching & facilitating teams to deliver projects across functions, Organizing and facilitating workshops to define issues and develop solutions, Managing programs from initiation through to delivery, and. Developing & delivering presentations to both management and field crew level. The individual will be expected to manage the delivery of several projects simultaneously to streamline and continuously improve processes.
Gas Process & Engineering
The Gas Process and Engineering (Gas P&E) organization is responsible for all delivery, maintenance and operate processes for US Gas Distribution and Transmission ensuring safe, reliable and efficient service to NG US gas customers, as well as functional responsibility for Gas Engineering and Asset Management, LNG Operations, Gas Resource Management, Pipeline Safety and Compliance and Transgas (LNG Trucking). LDP participants will have exposure to building our long- and short-term capital investment plan for the Gas business, some of the initiatives Gas P&E is undergoing to improve Pipeline Safety and regulatory compliance, engineering and asset management assurance and capability building, and how we are managing and improving business performance by process.
Advanced Data and Analytics
The Advanced Data and Analytics team uses Big Data to develop forecasting, optimization, modeling, and simulation tools that fundamentally transform the company’s current business operations and its future growth trajectory. The team builds solutions that enable National Grid business units to shift to using data to make effective decisions across the organization, from the front-line/tactical level to the longer-term/strategic level. The team is uniquely positioned to identify areas where advanced analytical tools can improve National Grid’s business operations, and members are expected to independently identify opportunities for improvement across the entire enterprise.
Energy Procurement maintains a strong relationship to preserve the trust of the various state regulatory staff in order to ensure full and timely commodity cost recovery. The financial value captured for both customers as well as shareholders via optimization of gas supply assets enhances customer satisfaction and financial performance of the company. Energy Procurement maintains a culture of compliance in order to maintain a high level of credibility both internally and externally with state and federal regulatory entities.
Energy Procurement consists of the following areas: FERC Compliance and Contracting, Origination and Price Volatility Management, Gas Supply Planning, Wholesale Gas Supply, Wholesale Electric Supply, Energy Procurement and Environmental Transactions, LIPA Fuel Management Services.
The Internal Consultancy group works with business and functional leaders to drive strategic initiatives across National Grid Plc, working on diverse, challenging and interesting problems. Areas of focus include the following:
Strategy activation – turning high level strategic direction into discrete plans and business actions, with corresponding business cases and resource plans
Complex problem solving – breaking down problems, identifying options and setting up implementation
Operating model and transformation support – future state design and implementation planning
Performance insight – opportunities for improved efficiency
The team is structured to execute projects in lieu of engaging outside support, and to supplement/partner with outside firms – whatever is going to efficiently get to the best answer for the business. Expected benefits from the Internal Consultancy include:

When engaging outside consultants, ensure the right scope and suppliers, help manage their performance, and capture best practices
2019 MBA candidate (or other comparable program that includes a leadership development component) from top-tier professional school
3-7 years of professional experience with personnel/project/program management
Valid driver's license with safe driving history
Strong interest in sustainability and industry transformation
Utility/energy industry experience desired but not required
Ability to start LDP on July 15, 2019
