Job Description:

This position is the Section Manager for Structural Analysis Section and is responsible for leading a group of space sensor engineers for programs reporting to the Hardware Center’s Space EO Sensor Systems Engineering Department. This position also serves as a Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer for the department and programs, often serving as the Structural Analysis lead on Space EO programs. The Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer is responsible for establishing key components of space sensors to develop new products, processes, standards, or operational plans. The engineer must also create improvements of processes, systems or products to effectively influence new designs for producibility and establish strong communication lines between multi-cross functional teams including external customers or vendors. In this role the engineer will typically manage a functional team of opto-mechanical engineers supporting the development of complex EO sensors and subassemblies. The role requires a management knowledge base and must possess expertise in EO sensor design and mechanical engineering as well as a general understanding of other areas and disciplines.

The Section Manager Mechanical Engineer is responsible for understanding design requirements, assembly and test procedures and processes, and cPDM system. The position requires experience in detailed design with knowledge of AI&T and production. This engineering leader oversees the work products of opto-mechanical engineers supporting concept, detailed design, and sub-assembly builds of EO space products. The EO Mechanical Engineering team works closely with the sensor design team, manufacturing engineering, and systems engineering and is expected to support the engineering development team from conceptual design phases through preliminary and critical design, build, test and delivery of complex Electro-Optical Sensors.

Position is with the Space EO Sensor Systems department in El Segundo, California.

Job Related Activities:

  • Lead a group of highly skilled structural analysts supporting a variety of programs across SAS, primarily in Space Systems but also other business units

  • Review and provide feedback on structural analysis trades, work products and program reviews for members of your team. Verify analysis methodologies are consistent with section processes and community accepted practices.

  • Enable continued growth of all levels of personnel through knowledge transfer, training and exposure to the space structural community (symposia, conferences, etc). Ensure junior engineers have consistent access to senior engineers to review work and provide guidance. (It has been shown much more effective to have the senior engineers be responsible to initiate and continue contact since junior engineers are hesitant to do this).

  • Provide timely feedback to group members throughout the year, and ensure sufficient reviews are provided by peers and program leads during mid-term and end of year assessments. Address issues quickly with analysts if raised by program personnel.

  • If the analyst is providing support consistent with the group standards, ensure they are defended and supported.

  • Guide the creation and maintenance of analysis methodologies through released enablers, to both serve as a way to train new personnel and also provide a baseline process for consistency of work from program to program.

  • Serve as a liaison to programs to supply analysts to support tasks, not only level of effort support but also in "pop up" tasks.

  • Responsible to requesting and obtaining needed software tools and licenses to enable efficient analysis work.
  • Lead and own the EO sensor design, documentation, and implementation of EO hardware.
  • Actively work with Program Management, Systems Engineering, and Customers to develop and manage objectives and requirements for related pursuits and projects.
  • Lead an EO sensor Engineering Team to successfully design and document solutions to meet program objectives and requirements.
  • Lead the management of subcontractors required for the development of EO related equipment.
  • Comply with Export/Import (EX/IM) regulations and policies and support Jurisdiction Classification Assessments (JCAs) as needed.
  • Ensure the consistent application of engineering best practice and that all activities undertaken under your control are conducted to common standards in accordance with Raytheon's processes.
