Job Description:
IDS Engineering's Mechanical Engineering Directorate (MED) leads in mechanical hardware design, development and production of radars, command and control, effectors, communications and other technical systems operating in the ground-based tactical and undersea environments. MED uses state-of-the-art tools, processes, technology and Raytheon Six Sigma principles to deliver innovative solutions to make the world a safer place.

The MED team is seeking a Director of the MED Technical Staff. This position reports to the Director of the 1350 person MED team, serves as the chief engineer for MED, and provides the leadership of the Directorate Technical Staff. Position duties and qualifications include:

  • Leader of the MED Technical Staff including performance management, staffing, employee development, training, and other line management tasks for the Technical Staff. The MED Technical Staff lead manages a department budget, executes and tracks directorate initiatives specific to the Staff, and reports monthly status to the Director
  • Technical Leader for IDS Mechanical Engineering including establishment of high technical standards, identification of best practices, and problem resolution on any project or program in the directorate. Tasks may span any area of expertise within the Directorate and will include high visibility problem resolution
  • Review of program status including assisting the Director in all areas related to Directorate operations. Tasks may include program/proposal staffing, technical and cost proposal preparation, and proposal and EAC approval
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering capabilities available across the Raytheon enterprise and the utilization of the expertise to enhance our performance on programs through enterprise collaboration. Provide a conduit for Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) technical expertise to support Raytheon across the businesses when requested
  • The position requires frequent interaction with all levels of Raytheon Management, internal and external customers
  • Mentor and develop engineering fellows and other senior engineering staff. In conjunction with the MED Director and Department Managers, identify engineering fellow candidates – develop training plans for candidates and monitor progress
  • Serve as approver on all technical papers and presentations as directed by the MED Director
This position requires an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment. Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Required Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizenship is required
  • Active/Current Secret US Security Clearance.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
  • Minimum 14 years relevant professional experience
  • Experience managing large cross functional teams of over 50 employees
  • Experience in technical and program leadership positions
  • Experience preparing both technical and cost proposals and the ability to critically review proposals
  • Communication skills with ability to present challenging technical issues to senior leadership
  • Ability to travel in support of MED activities both domestic and international
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 10+ years participating in technical and program leadership positions
  • Raytheon (R6s) Six Sigma Certification
  • Experience in the Defense or Aerospace industries
  • Experience leading and participating in design and development activities
  • Knowledge of earned value management and other program management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop senior technical staff (ie: Engineering fellows)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead at the department level
  • Experience in building teams with universities or small businesses
