Designs and defines system architecture for new or existing computer systems.

 

  1. Performs complex systems development and design work that may include logic design, I/O design, firmware development, model formulation, manufacturing and development cost projections, computer architecture analysis and design, and analog or digital systems engineering.
  2. Performs systems modeling, simulation, and analysis.
  3. Plans upgrades of operating systems and designs systems enhancements.
  4. Develops documentation on new or existing systems.
  5. Develops and conducts tests to ensure systems meet documented user requirements.
  6. Identifies, analyzes, and resolves system problems.
  7. Provides system/equipment/specialized training and technical guidance.
  8. Determines system specifications, input/output processes, and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility.
  9. Provides guidance and work leadership to less-experienced systems engineers and may have supervisory responsibility.
  10. May serve as a technical team or task lead.
  11. Serves as liaison with clients, participating in meetings to ensure client needs are met.
  12. Maintains current knowledge of relevant technology as assigned
  13. Participates in special projects as required

 

Position Description

This position supports the program’s Cloud Support Services (CSS) team to provide quality cost effective solutions to the client. As part of the CSS Team the Cloud Engineer’s expertise is needed to support a sophisticated enterprise cloud environment.

The Cloud Engineer will actively participate with Scrum development teams and meetings. The engineer will be responsible for working with a highly functional team developing and automating server routines, optimizing system performance, establishing system monitoring, and maintaining established operating systems and security protocols for large production systems. Other responsibilities will include working with the team to define task breakdowns and effort estimates; as well as preparing design and test documents.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Architect, build and maintain cloud infrastructure to support team and customer initiatives
  • Manage all server monitoring systems and alert functions; respond as primary resource to alerts and communicate issues internally as appropriate
  • Maintain and improve existing infrastructure (build out autoscaling, support new services, optimize for cost efficiencies)
  • Administer production, staging and development environments
  • Manage and aggregate server logs and monitor for security and system related incidents
  • Monitor and analyze system performance, such as server load and resource usage
  • Maintain and improve existing build and deployment processes using CI/CD tools
  • Apply configuration management disciplines to maintain software revisions, security patches, hardening, and documentation
  • Enforce best practices for security and reliability, and drive security initiatives, like access control and vulnerability testing
  • Work with A&A Teams to maintain security requirements for operation of systems
  • Perform routine equipment checks and preventative maintenance
  • Maintain up to date documentation of designs/configurations
  • Work with other service providers to support areas of common interest
  • On-call support may be required

 

 

Qualifications:

10-15 years of related systems engineering experience.

 

Required Skills:

  • Experience as a system architect/administrator/operator in a large scale production environment
  • Strong experience with Linux distributions such as RedHat, Ubuntu, CentOS
  • Strong understanding of DevOps and software/application development processes
  • Experience with GitLab, Jenkins, Nexus, and other DevOps/Continuous Integration tools
  • Experience with cloud orchestration tools (i.e. SALT, Chef, Ansible)
  • Experience with public clouds such as AWS, Google, Rackspace
  • Knowledge of IAAS, PAAS and/or SAAS cloud technologies.
  • Knowledge of network technologies, common infrastructure components, load balancers, firewalls, virtual and physical infrastructure design
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must possess excellent time management skills and the drive to work unsupervised

 Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Java and Python web framework
  • Experience building Amazon EC2 instances and S3 buckets for development, test, and production environments
  • Experience working closely with software development teams
  • Understanding of access management and security groups (i.e. LDAP, IAM, S3 bucket, Cloud Trail, SSH, VPN, etc.)
  • Programming experience with Java; Python and/or Shell scripting
  • Ability to write and use unit and functional testing

Education:
