General Dynamics IT is seeking a Research Associate for in vivo studies to support the mission of the Experimental Therapeutics (ET) Branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The mission of the WRAIR Branch of Experimental Therapeutics is to discover and develop new pharmaceutical agents to protect military members from death, disease, and injury. The ET Branch is organized into three distinct departments which contribute to the different phases leading to FDA drug approval. The three comprising departments are the Departments of Drug Discovery, Drug Development, and Clinical Pharmacology.

This position is in direct support of the Department of Drug Discovery. Specific tasks include:

  • Provide in vivo screening and imaging support for antiparasitic drug discovery.
  • Participate in project planning (goals, timelines, resources).
  • Ensure achievement of the project goals in a timely manner and within budget.
  • Oversee animal procurement and scheduling within the Animal Management System and applicable Departmental testing schedules.
  • Implement experimental protocols addressing Division goals for antiparasitic drug discovery and development.
  • Carryout in vivo studies on approved protocols to include: parasite infections; treatment; animal husbandry; data collection and data analysis.
  • Acquire all needed training for ALAC (Accreditation of Animal Laboratory Care), RLATG - Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist, RLAT - Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS), and ALAT - Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS) accreditation as an animal handler.
  • Analyze data from the in vivo imaging of mice and hamsters with transgenic leishmaniasis parasites.
  • Summarize experimental data for reports, presentations, and publications.
  • Establish and maintain searchable database containing salient characteristics of cryopreserved samples including location in the cryobank.
  • Assist in the execution of experiments involving in vivo imaging of parasites.
  • Maintain data derived from the in vivo imaging experiments in the Division’s Electronic Data Management System or other designated location.
  • Conduct in vitro assays in accordance with the Division’s testing strategy for malaria and leishmania.
  • Assist with the preparation of IACUC protocols and amendments as required.
  • Attend and present at relevant national scientific conferences, if required by Department of Discovery.

Qualifications:

  • 2-5 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge Base: Perform and maintain all aspects of the in vivo antiparasitic models for rodents. Analyze and summarize experimental data from the imaging system for reports, publications, and presentations. Assist in the preparation of IACUC protocols and amendments as required. Ensure that all lab equipment is maintained and serviced as required
  • Physical Capabilities: Work may involve long periods of standing and handling of BSL2 level infectious agents, toxic chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens. Work will require the ability to operate research equipment requiring manual dexterity. The ability to handle research animals is also needed.

  • Work environment: Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 laboratory and animal BSL 2 laboratory. Potential exposure to infectious agents, toxic chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Will also work in an office setting.

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in a scientific discipline.
  • RLATG - Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist, RLAT - Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS), and ALAT - Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (AALAS) are desired certifications.
