Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience

Responsibilities for this Position
General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Senior Optical Engineer. The preferred candidate will have experience in optical design and optical tooling design of metallic optics (mirrors, telescope assemblies, etc) from inception to fabrication, testing and production support through customer delivery. This position provides the candidate with the opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that support the execution of high-stakes national security missions.
Performs design and development of optical hardware from individual mirrors to multi-optic assemblies
Conducts optical analysis to show design is compliant to customer requirements
Proficient use and understanding of Optical tolerancing and performance budgeting in addition to Design for Manufacture (DFM) concepts, principles, and theories
Creates designs for tooling used in the fabrication and testing of optics and optical assemblies
Must be proficient with solid modeling CAD tools to create mechanical models and accompanying drawings
Solid knowledge with technical standards, manufacturing/fabrication methods, government/industry standards
Coordinates designs with manufacturing engineering to ensure the practicality of the design and to assist in the solution of production difficulties encountered in manufacturing
Troubleshoots and modifies designs as required
Assist in the development and maintenance of assembly process procedures/instructions to define the proper build sequence, tooling, equipment, and methods
Communicates with internal and external customers on all aspects of design and testing
Contributes to continuous improvement activities and Root Cause / Corrective Action investigations
Researches previous design approaches and provides recommendations for improvements
Optical analysis software experience (Zemax. Sigfit and TracePro preferred)
3D CAD experience (Solidworks experience preferred)
Technical drawing knowledge: drawing standards, tolerancing, GD&T (Geometric, Dimensioning and Tolerancing
Experience with design of optics and optical assemblies including tolerancing and performance budgeting
Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly
Ability to perform basic structural and thermal analysis a plus
Requires technical evaluation skills, and basic manufacturing engineering knowledge
Strong problem solving and decision making skills
