A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Trade school training and/or completion of a formal or informal 4 year apprenticeship in an associated trade such as machining or tool and die making is preferred, plus a minimum of 10 years of extensive, recent experience in precision model or prototype shop operations is preferred.
In lieu of a degree or apprenticeship, directly related experience that would qualify the incumbent to satisfactorily perform the job duties.

Responsibilities for this Position
General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Senior Advanced Instrument Making Associate. The position provides an opportunity to enhance the performance and profitability of an organization that supports some of our nation’s fundamental defense services. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:
Highly motivated individual that is capable of working with very little supervision and works well in a team environment
Directly contributes to concurrent engineering efforts through development of new concepts and techniques in the machining and fabrication of new products
Works concurrently with design engineers, manufacturing engineers and suppliers to come up with creative solutions that contribute to the predictability of a part or tool
Assists project managers by quick reaction, which will influence the major programs schedule and delivery dates
Uses advanced theories and concepts of Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to provide the best solutions
Has considerable freedom of action on all types of problems
Transforms information from prints, written instructions, sketches and oral instructions into finished working mechanisms and assemblies
Efficiently sets up and operates all types of precision tool room equipment
Makes extensive use of precision measuring equipment and Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools
Machines to extremely close interrelated tolerances and finish requirements, working on devices and parts having intricate irregular shapes, exercising the utmost care to insure the proper fitting together of precision parts
May specialize in precision sheet metal work or machine work
Devises and fabricates tools required in the forming of complicated sheet metal parts and assemblies
Fabricates all types of sheet metal parts with proficiency
Performs all necessary mathematical computations related to the dimensions, tolerances, set-up and speeds and feeds of parts and machines
Reads the most complex blueprints with full proficiency
Delegates work to others
Works well with people including project managers, design engineers, manufacturing, materiel, quality and suppliers to ensure that customer needs are completely satisfied at all levels
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong knowledge of machine shop and tool room operations and a high level of skill and ingenuity in improvisation
Ability to work from minimal design information or guidance in order to fabricate or machine a concept item
Ability to multi-task and while maintaining concentration and focus
Ability to train or mentor less experienced personnel on machining or sheet metal equipment
Ability to use computer aided design,(CAD) tools to design and manufacture tools, hardware and prototype parts
Strong knowledge of the workability of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics and other composite materials and their machining characteristics
Strong interpersonal skills
