Job Description:
The Operations Summer Intern will participate in complex and exciting manufacturing projects focused on Lean Manufacturing techniques. Additionally, the intern will work independently reviewing business systems and collecting the necessary data to assess the opportunities for improvement in their assigned product line. The intern will work on a wide range of weapon systems including tactical missiles to strategic defense products, and have broad-based exposure to various business areas including Finance, Integrated Supply Chain and Manufacturing.

Some project examples are listed below:

  • Design, control, and improve the manufacturing process through value stream mapping and waste identification
  • Reduce cycle time and/or customer lead time
  • Reduce WIP
  • Reduce labor cost
  • Reduce material cost
  • Increase system throughput

For Multi-Level Intern Requisitions:
This position can be a Salary Grade of G04, G05 or NUG based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position.
• G04 (College Junior by Fall 2019) - must have completed 60 hours of college
• G05 (College Senior by Fall 2019) - must have completed 90 hours of college
• NUG (Post- Graduate-Masters-PhD by Fall 2019) - must have an undergraduate degree and currently enrolled or about to enroll in a graduate degree program

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience with some of the following through internships, class projects, or related activities: Technical problem solving, Engineering interpretation of technical documentation, Team leadership, Project and risk management
  • Coursework in either Lean Manufacturing or Statistical Process Control.
  • Must be a college Junior, Senior or Graduate student by Fall 2019
  • This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access US only data systems.

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Manufacturing knowledge gained through previous related employment
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification

Required Education (including major): Currently pursuing a BS / BA degree from a four-year university and entering as a college Junior or Senior year OR pursuing a MS / MA / PhD by Fall 2019. Must be working towards a degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemistry, Physics Major, or equivalent technical discipline. Must be appropriate grade level listed above.
