Job Description:
Raytheon Space Systems Engineering is currently searching for a Manager to lead the Space Mission Systems Department, an organization of approximately 70 systems engineering leaders, located in El Segundo and Washington D.C.. The charter of the Space Mission Systems department is support the mission level architecture, analysis, planning and modelling that define our Space product portfolio. The department manager is responsible for their departments engineers delivering systems engineering work products and services of the highest technical integrity and ensuring that the engineers have the required skills to provide the capability, efficiency and capacity to meet Space Systems business needs.

Responsibilities of the department manager include:

  • Understanding, developing, and executing a supporting strategy specific to the Space Systems business strategy
  • Frequently interacting with program managers, business development personnel, and engineering management to understand and achieve their goals and objectives
  • Driving technology development within the department, executing product level technology roadmaps, and championing the development of intellectual property
  • Staffing and executing systems engineering program tasks; ensuring quality, timeliness, and technical integrity of work products developed by department personnel.
  • Leading systems engineering and multi-function cost and technical proposal development teams
  • Mentoring team members and creating a culture of knowledge sharing throughout the department
  • Managing performance development of the department, to include setting and achieving goals, career counseling, compensation planning, and employee training and development in alignment with their individual career objectives and business needs
  • Ensuring achievement of diversity within the organization
  • Deploying process improvement initiatives; championing productivity initiatives, actively managing productivity metrics and driving improvement; ensuring compliance to Systems Engineering processes

Required Skills:
  • 12+ years of engineering experience to include systems engineering leadership roles in Space Systems sensor development, Space Mission development, Space Segment modelling, or other relevant experience
  • Experience with Space Mission Analysis and Design
  • Experience with proposal development both technical writing and cost estimating
  • Experience building relationships with Program Managers and Directors in order to negotiate in difficult situations
  • Experience with staffing, strategic planning, career development, and resource allocation
  • Active TS/SCI Clearance
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

Desired Skills:
  • Strong business, project management, negotiation, mentoring, and customer interaction background
  • Strong experience in Space Mission/Payload modelling, planning, or operations
  • Experience in Space hardware validation and test
  • Knowledge of the space enterprise vision and similar studies
  • Strong leadership presence and influence
  • Effective with multi-functional teams, including software, hardware, systems, as well as finance and program management
  • Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills – a team builder
  • Experience with introducing and implementing new ideas
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Space Sensor/Payload design, development, and test
