A software developer to support needs of the SNPP/JPSS-1 Sounder Science Investigator-led Process (SIPS) Projects is being offered. The SIPS is part of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS), a collaborative program between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its acquisition agent, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The role involves migrating existing legacy software to the newer Sounder SIPS environment, developing software mostly in C++ for NASA Level 1 products and higher that conform to certain standards: Climate and forecasting (CF) and Attribute Conventions for Data Discovery (ACSS). Another major role is to interface with science team members to accept their code and wrap it to be production software.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Interface regularly with software team members & System Engineer as well as Science Team members
  • Interface directly with science team members to understand their science algorithm as needed and gather requirements
  • Develop software based on requirements
  • Attend regular team meetings
  • Wrap science code to run in the SIPS data system at JPL
  • Assist in all areas regarding software integration and migration

Education / Work Experience:
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, engineering or other STEM discipline, plus 6 years of related experience
Required Skills:
  • Proficiency in C++, Python, GitHub, working with Makefiles
  • Linux proficiency
  • Experience with scripting language and capability to create/edit scripts
Desired Skills:
  • Experience or strong knowledge of MatLab, Fortran and IDL
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated versatility in Perl and Bash.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated versatility JAVA, C
  • Full understanding of HDF 4 and 5 with NetCDF
  • Experience working with science algorithms
  • Knowledge in Earth Science and Remote Sensing
