Raytheon Space & Airborne Systems - Systems Engineering, Integration and Test (SEIT) EW Electronic Protect Department is seeking talented and collaborative technical candidates to help deliver emerging and disruptive solutions to ensure warfighter advantage. The selected candidate will be given opportunities to engage in a variety of cutting edge and innovative technology development across the Advanced Concepts & Technology (ACT) mission area.

The Systems/Software Engineer will assist in the technical leadership and execution of a governance process to perform collaborative systems engineering to review, assess, and make changes to the OMS Standards (collectively referred to as the Open Architecture (OA) Standards). The Systems Engineer shall lead and perform collaborative systems engineering to continue to develop, evolve, update, improve, and manage the OA Standards and deliver new versions of the OMS standards. The results will provide industry with a software architecture to support the development of third party applications such as advanced algorithms and techniques that provide cutting edge capability to various EW payloads in a short time frame. The software architecture will focus on the internal processing functions needed to maximize ESM and EA capabilities, while also defining software interfaces to interact with firmware and hardware both internal and external to the payload.

This position requires strong initiative, communication, and collaboration with other engineers and personnel from Raytheon, the Government, and our competitors in the industry. This position will include frequent travel and interactions with Architecture Working Groups. It is also expected that this Systems Engineer will mentor and develop junior Systems and Software Engineers on the tenets of Open Architecture. The Systems Engineer is accountable to the Chief Engineer and Program Manager.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop innovative solutions to complex technical challenges often involving multiple subsystem interactions as both an Individual Contributor and a Technical Lead
  • Actively participate in definition of team objectives and provide solutions to complex technical tasks including system design decisions involving trade studies, requirements allocation, and verification methods
  • Conduct trade space analysis on the software architecture
  • Define and document hardware assumptions, standards and requirements
  • Define interfaces and information contained in firmware that will be utilize and controlled by the software architecture as well as reconfigure any front end hardware
  • Define operating systems and software required to implement application programming interfaces to enable a portable and upgradable software architecture
  • Develop software architecture that can support engagement of emerging complex threats and operations
  • Develop a validation and verification procedure that utilizes Formal Methods to ensure third party applications are working properly
  • Define and document the technical data package required for implementation of the software architecture
  • Document risks and shortfalls associated with the software architectures and interfaces
  • Define interfaces and information contained in firmware that will be utilize and controlled by the software architecture as well as reconfigure any front end hardware
  • Define interfaces to accommodate such capabilities as beam steering and beam management services external to the architecture

Required Skills:

  • Minimum 8 years of related work experience, including a solid understanding and experience with software architecture design principles and abstractions
  • Experience with generating software and/or system architectures
  • Strong desire to grow and learn new tools along with a willingness to take ownership of product
  • Experience with developing use cases
  • Strong engineering analytical and technical writing skills, excellent verbal communication skills with ability to present data and explain results to management and customers
  • Experience with generating test plans and procedures
  • Prior leadership experience and communication skills for engagement with program management, technical team members, customers, subcontractors, and industry partners
  • Occasional business travel is required
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with Active (or active within past 24 months) DoD Secret Clearance


Desired Skills:

  • A “big thinker” who does not operate in a silo, who can envision where a program or product line is heading or needs to go, while considering the technical aspects of how to get there
  • Experience in Electronic Warfare or similar experience
  • Experience and/or ability to update and maintain code developed in C++, MATLAB or Java
  • Experience with generating system use cases using SysML, Rhapsody
  • Ability to understand XML and familiar with developing, annotating, and updating XML schemas
  • Familiar with UML 2.0
  • Experience with schedule generation and budget management (i.e. Earned Value Management)
  • Experience with existing architectures and standards such as Open Mission Systems (OMS), Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) and Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA)
  • Experience in the application of OMS or UCI on an airborne weapon subsystem like Radar, EW, Communications, or Resource Management
  • Ability to hold a Top Secret clearance with SCI


Required Education : Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline

Desired Education : Master’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)
