A data engineer (DE) serves to aggregate and normalize data from many sources of observations that are then processed to generate activity features that summarize the key attributes of the data collected. An effective DE team member will closely coordinate with a data scientist (DS) on each project to scope, design, and implement project based work. Generated feature and selected raw data will be saved to a persistent data store to enable historical analysis and higher context feature generation to support machine intelligence (MI) applications. Key DE skills include: file-based data ingest, service-based data ingest, software programming, database ingest, MI feature generation, feature visualization, and feature persistence to data stores.

A strong sense of urgency, empathy, self-driven learning, and life balance are key to doing well in this role.

Required: Bachelor of Science (BS) in a computer science related degree with 6 yearsâ?? experience demonstrating at least 5 of the key DE skillsets (i.e. file-based data ingest, service-based data ingest, software programming, database ingest, MI feature generation, feature visualization, and feature persistence to data stores). Software skills must include C# or Java programming; database structured query language (SQL); Matlab, Octave, or R; plus scripting language in Python, Scala, PowerShell, or Bash experience. Must be capable of securing a government security clearance.

Preferred: 9 yearsâ?? experience with 6 of the DE skillsets. Software skills in C++, service-oriented architecture (SOA), C# object relational model (ORM), or high-performance computing (HPC) programming. Has an active department of defense clearance.

This is an IEEE grade 6 equivalent role that has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments. Plans and develops engineering projects with unique or controversial problems which impact major company programs. Involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation, novel concepts and approaches. Maintains liaison with individuals and units within or outside the organization, with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters. Work at this level requires extensive progressive experience. Supervision received is administrative, with assignments given in terms of general objectives and limits. Plans, organizes, and supervises the work of a staff of engineers and technicians. Evaluates progress and results obtained, recommends major changes to achieve objectives. As individual researcher or staff specialist, may be assisted on individual projects.
