We are looking for a Transmission Planning Policy and Process Engineer for our Waltham, MA location.

Job Purpose

The Transmission Planning Policy Engineer role is critical for monitoring development of new industry standards and policies to ensure that National Grid successfully fulfills its obligations with regard to planning, asset management, and data management activities for its electric transmission assets.  In this capacity, the engineer—working with internal and external industry professionals—will monitor and contribute to the development of new standards/policies and develop internal processes and practices to ensure National Grid’s compliance in a thorough and efficient manner.


Transmission Planning & Asset Management develops plans and sponsors projects that enable National Grid to maintain or improve reliability and optimize the return on investment from the assets related to electrical transmission in New England (typically 69 kV and greater.)  The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience to provide leadership for Transmission Planning & Asset Management with regards to process and policy issues. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement policy, processes, tools and documentation for Transmission Planning & Asset Management to maintain compliance with ISO New England rules/policies, NPCC Criteria/Directories, NERC Standards, and FERC Orders.
  • Represent National Grid on national, regional, and local levels in various transmission planning and operations committees, task forces and working groups for the purpose of monitoring development of new/evolution of existing standards to ensure that the company’s interests are protected.
  • Take lead role during development of National Grid's comments to FERC NOPR's and/or NERC Standard changes
  • Act as the subject matter expert for internal queries related standards and policy issues.
  • Interpret results from analytical studies for transmission system to ensure compliance and adherence to standards. These analytical studies will likely include power system thermal, voltage, and reactive analyses, as well as transient, dynamic, harmonic, and short circuit analyses as they relate to system reliability, economics, and operating flexibility.
  • Present study reports and findings to internal management and the Independent System Operator - New England (ISO-NE) committees for various approvals.
  • Provide support for need cases to siting and licensing team during various hearings.
  • Manage consultants' work as necessary ensuring technical adequacy complying with National Grid, ISO-NE, NPCC and NERC standards and criteria. 


  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering school required. Master's Degree in Electrical Power Systems or other advanced engineering or management degrees desired.
  • A minimum of 2 years related experience
  • Professional Engineering registration or its equivalent is strongly desired.
  • Familiarity with NERC Transmission Planning Standards, NPCC Criteria, ISO New England and State level Transmission Planning rules with ability to understand how changes in those standards impact National Grid's business as well as how they impact system studies performed by National Grid's Transmission Planning Engineers.
  • Experience or thorough knowledge of state-of-the-art techniques in power flow, short circuit and transient stability analyses.  Ability to critically evaluate results of analysis and studies required for senior level positions.
  • High level of personal initiative an ability to interact with company personnel, external engineering firms, regulatory representatives, town/city officials, and ISO/NPCC/NERC representatives in a positive, team building manner.
  • Knowledge of engineering economics, energy market economics, project management, team leadership, and utility business practices.
  • Familiarity with ANSI, NESC, and/or IEEE standards.
  • Knowledge of power systems strongly preferred including: protection system operation and reliability philosophy, utility system practices, three-phase power system theory/operation both static and dynamic, short circuit theory/application, motor generation theory/application, reactive compensation theory, substation configuration/construction/maintenance techniques, transmission line configurations/design/maintenance techniques, outage planning, and congestion philosophy and analysis.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and through written documents.
  • Ability to prioritize work and participate as a team member on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in personal computer office based software applications such as MS Office Suite is highly desirable
