Our cross-functional team of engineers bring together a range of disciplines including Systems, Electrical, Software, Mechanical, Test, Production, and Quality Assurance. The team represents decades of experience supporting U.S. Navy Fleet Ballistic Missile programs, like the current Trident II Mk6 Mod1 program. We are leveraging this wealth of experience and expertise to help our Navy and Draper customers design, develop, produce, field, and support the Trident guidance systems; as well as investigate and develop advanced guidance concepts and systems for the upcoming next-generation Trident Strategic Weapon System.

The Raytheon Trident team in Cambridge, MA has an opening for a Senior Principal Software Engineer with experience developing software architectures and applications in either C/C++ or Java. Development experience should include software architecture generation, coding, integration, and test, targeting a variety of platforms including factory (manufacturing) test equipment, or COTS PCs, or Single Board Computers (SBCs) running Windows or Linux. Experience with real-time applications is also preferred.

This is a customer-facing position that provides an excellent opportunity to act as either a software project technical lead, or to work as an individual contributor within a multi-disciplinary team to develop, implement, analyze, and assess new or refreshed software architecture designs using Object-Oriented (OO) and Model-Based Engineering (MBE) principles and tools for defense applications.

The successful candidate has a proven history of technical and leadership expertise, typically from a base experience as an individual contributor engineer followed by growth into team leadership positions for software or multi-discipline engineering teams. The candidate should have experience with the full software lifecycle, in particular system/software requirements analysis. As a technical leader, the candidate will require solid written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively with other program leaders and senior technical contributors, in addition to producing planning and technical work products for internal and external customers. The successful candidate will adhere to accepted standards and processes for software development, conduct and participate in code peer reviews and design reviews, and generate test plans to ensure maximum stability and quality of code. The ideal candidate should also have experience with this lifecycle when utilizing industry norm Agile development methodologies such as Scrum.

  • Communicate effectively with team members across disciplines, project management, and customers
  • Experience with presenting detailed technical and schedule status at program and customer meetings and reviews.
  • Understand use-cases, system requirements, interface definition, and requirement validation and verification.
  • Provides document review and resolves technical systems engineering and integration issues.
  • Must have the ability to manage time and resources in order to meet assigned deadlines.

Required Skills:
  • US citizen with active Secret security clearance
  • 12+ years of experience (15+ preferred) with SW design, development and test.
  • Demonstrated technical task leadership of either all software engineering team, or cross-functional teams. Experience in leading and motivating technical teams and mentoring
  • BS or higher degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent.
  • Hands-on expertise with Object Oriented Analysis and Design (OOA/D) concepts and use of Unified Modeling language (UML) or other design language/notation
  • Experience in the phases of the software lifecycle, including software architecture, system/software requirements analysis, design, implementation, verification testing, system integration, and post-delivery maintenance. Hands-on experience with SW Configuration Management and Peer Review tools
  • Enthusiastic & resourceful performer; able to work in a dynamic, high-visibility role.
  • Self-motivated and capable of performing tasks independently with minimal oversight.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills and sound problem solving skills.
  • Existing (active) DoD Secret Clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience with Labview and/or MATLAB
  • Experience with embedded development and Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) such as Wind River VxWorks
  • Agile development experience, using Agile Lifecycle Management tools like Version One or Rational Team Concert, and including role as a Scrum Master or Product Owner
  • Continuous Integration methodologies.
  • Experience with detailed cost / schedule planning and performance
