Job Purpose
National Grid (NG) outsources a significant portion of their construction and maintenance work plan. National Grid Capital Delivery (CD) and operations delivers over 3 billion dollars in electric and gas capital construction annually to ensure safe and reliable energy solutions for our customers and communities. The CD portfolio encompasses several contracts including but not limited to: Substation, T-Line, D-Line, Substation, Civil, Support Services, & Gas Maintenance & Services.
Within CD, Contracts & Commercial provides safety conscious best in class contractor resources to perform the work while maximizing value and minimizing cost. The Non-Complex Contract Management team manages adherence of contract terms, issue resolution, and contractor and contract performance, ensuring Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality compliance is maintained and the Company's procedures and objectives are achieved.
The Contract Specialist, as a member of the Non Complex Contract Management team for both Gas & Electric supports the business in post award contract management: Stakeholder management, conflict resolution, understanding the need of business requirements, support the Process & Performance team, in development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to drive performance, while maximizing value throughout.
Key Accountabilities
Contract Implementation
Participate in Contract Orientations
Help train stakeholders on all aspects of the contract management process
Become the expert in the contract created by the strategy team
Contract Management
Ensure highest level of safety, performance, and regulatory compliance by the contractors, while maximizing value throughout via overall management of contract
Manage interface between contractor, business owner(s), and internal NG key stakeholders. Provide contract interpretations, resolutions to issues with contractor base, and conduit to escalation process
Manage process for agreed to periodic reviews and pricing changes. Create and present rationale for pricing changes to leadership, negotiate with contractor and business customers/stakeholders, assure timely implementation
Improve the effectiveness of cost assurance and risk management by identifying and implementing opportunities to further embed cost assurance activities within delivery units
Collaborate with the Strategy team and maintain the key contractual documents including but not limited to the Contract Specification, Unit Library, Material Library
Develop agenda, coordinate and facilitate annual, bi-annual and other l performance and management meetings
Promote a culture of continuous improvement and value for money within the delivery of contracted construction services/resources, thru challenge to current methods and development of new adaptations of costing and cost control
Drive best practice sharing through promoting areas of learning across Capital Delivery
Spend time in the field to better understand the work and expand network.
Work with other departments to align contract management process and drive best practice sharing through promoting areas of learning across Capital Delivery
Stakeholder Management
Consistent and active communication with vendors throughout all levels of the organization.
Develop and maintain a relationship with all internal and external stakeholders by serving as a single point of contact for contractual matters
Issue resolution – routinely field calls/emails from contractors and internal stakeholders on a variety of issues. Understand and document issues, talk with all applicable parties, organize ideas and make recommendation on optimal solution, propose and gain buy-in on solution, and update documents as required
Reporting / Audits
Ensure contract adherence through completing audits to ensure accuracy
Develop reports to aid in management of contracts
Storm Support
Support Securing Resources team during weather events in New York & New England. Responsibilities include procuring, processing, and tracking contractor crews
Travel
Meetings may require day visits to National Grid yards in local area. Business overnight travel may include trips to other regions outside of “home base” region, such as Waltham, Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo, Brooklyn and Long Island. Expected overnight travel should be < 20% of the time.
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Proven contribution to project and team membership and leadership.
Qualifications
Construction contract management, preferably in gas, oil, or utility (level specialist will be relevant to the years of experience)
Bachelor’s degree
Master’s degree preferred (MBA)
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications – more advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills are a plus
Self motivator
Ability to lead teams with varying goals, public speaking and presentations
Good Listener
Adept in interpreting contract terms, negotiating, and managing contractors to the terms
High level competencies in problem solving, conflict resolution, analytics, and influencing to achieve positive outcomes that meet objectives
Strong background in Contract Management and/or Construction is a plus
Excellent written & verbal communication – responsible for changing contract documents, developing communications and presentations
Stakeholder Management –will be expected to maintain a relationship with all National Grid & Contractor stakeholders
Public Speaking – experience speaking in front of both large and small groups, lead meetings and sometimes speak to or facilitate discussions with 75+ individuals
Analytical Skills – will be required to structure reports to aid in the management of the contract.
