GDIT is seeking a Bioanalytical Associate to support the mission of the Experimental Therapeutics (ET) Branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The mission of the WRAIR Branch of Experimental Therapeutics is to discover and develop new pharmaceutical agents to protect military members from death, disease, and injury. The Branch is the nation’s primary developer of new drugs to prevent and/or treat malaria and leishmaniasis. Collectively, ET engages in drug discovery, drug efficacy and mechanism evaluation, and formal preclinical and clinical development. This position supports the Drug Metabolism and Disposition Section (DMD) within the Department of Drug Development. Specific responsibilities include:
Assist with the development and validation of analytical methods for the identification of candidate new drugs and putative metabolites using HPLC with UV/VIS, radioactive monitor analyses, and/or mass spectrometry as needed.
Assist with the characterization of metabolites formation and metabolic profiles of candidate drugs using in vivo and in vitro techniques as needed. Prepare samples to be assayed using both manual and robotic/high-throughput means.
Use in vitro techniques (liver microsomes, hepatocytes, slices) to assess for potential metabolism-based drug-drug interactions involving hepatic P450 enzymes.
Assist with the design and implementation of cytotoxicity and permeability studies involving the use of cell cultures under aseptic techniques.
Maintain and troubleshoot HPLC and mass spectrometry systems, a robotic liquid handling system, and basic pharmacology/toxicology laboratory equipment.
Maintain appropriate data records and notebooks.
Prepare biological samples for analysis using methods to include tissue homogenization, blood spot filter puncture, and solvent extraction.
Conduct ELISA assays in support of pharmacokinetic and biomarker studies.
Perform chemical derivitization reactions when required for analyte detection.
Conduct in vitro assays using TECAN Liquid Handling systems.
Assist in manual tasks including, but not limited to, filling liquid nitrogen dewars and tanks for use in laboratory operations, biohazard disposal, and acquisition/return of gas tanks from the logistics facility.
Assist in chemical and supply inventories and laboratory organization as requested.
Present novel laboratory findings at a nationally recognized scientific meeting and submit for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Assist with the initiation and tracking of purchase request, and service calls through Medical Maintenance Branch.
Comply with all specified guidelines regarding safety, security, standard operating procedures, written protocols, technical manuals, and procurement of supplies/equipment as per WRAIR regulations
2+ years experience
Have working knowledge of HPLC analysis and familiarity with the handling of biological samples.
Have experience with basic MS Office (or compatible) software for generating reports and summaries for presentations, managing data spreadsheets, requesting supplies and materiel as needed to perform general laboratory maintenance.
Have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills as well as good written and oral communication.
Ideal candidate will have experience with metabolism related studies, along with troubleshooting and basic maintenance of mass spectrometry equipment
