Job Description:
Raytheon Company's Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) Mechanical Engineering Directorate (MED) is an industry leader in mechanical hardware design, development and production of radar, sonar, torpedo and combat system equipment. The Mechanical Engineering Directorate uses state-of- the-art tools, processes, technology, and Raytheon Six Sigma principles.

The Manufacturing Processes Section of the Materials Engineering Department provides support to manufacturing operations with technical expertise, laboratory capabilities and field experience. The group also provides technical support for all phases of design, manufacturing and field support by supplying technical expertise in metallurgy, composites, coatings, chemistry, bonding, potting, encapsulation, welding, brazing, heat treating, nondestructive testing and corrosion/deterioration prevention. This section aids in the transition from design to production and related manufacturing challenges. This section participates in supporting operations both within Raytheon facilities and at subcontractor, supplier, field and customer locations.

The Manufacturing Processes Section of the Materials Engineering Department is currently in need of an individual to join our team of Welding Subject Matter Experts (SME). This individual will have technical expertise in Welding Engineering to support all phases of design, manufacturing and product acceptance. Duties will include design for manufacturability reviews, process selection and definition, supplier assessment and recommendation, failure analysis, weld inspection, welding procedure development, training of welders and weld inspectors, administration of the welder certification program. The majority of time will be spent supporting manufacturing operations by performing technical assessments, implementing process and design refinements, monitoring and improving the quality of welded products for in-house operations and at suppliers. This job will require travel, in the U.S. and abroad, of up to 30%.

This position can be a Salary Grade G07 or Salary Grade G08 based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the positions.

This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance within one year of start date . Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.


Required Skills:

  • 2+ years of related experience
  • Experience in welding procedure development and testing, welder and welding operator training and certifications, welding fabrication problem solving and weld inspection.
  • Experience in interpreting engineering drawings, specifications and other technical material and then translating into practical procedural instructions.
Desired Skills:
  • Experience as a technical liaison between engineering, manufacturing and quality organizations.
  • Working knowledge of Military and Commercial Welding Specifications.
  • Basic understanding of welding metallurgy.
  • Must be self-motivated and possess good communication skills.
  • Desire and ability to work as a team member is essential.
  • Must be adaptable and willing to work in all project phases from concept and design through manufacturing.
  • Practical knowledge of other metal processing operations such as casting, forging, heat treating, machining, forming, etc.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills with the ability to identify root cause and implement appropriate corrective/preventive actions in the weld shop.
  • Experience in training and qualifying welders and inspectors to meet specification requirements.
  • Working knowledge of weld distortion mechanisms and control.
  • Testing laboratory skills including sectioning, metallography, fracture analysis, hardness testing, etc.
  • Working knowledge of Non-destructive Testing methods
  • Experience with aluminum and structural steel welding
Required Education (including Major):
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Welding Engineering or a related Engineering discipline with AWS CWEng (or equivalent) certification.
