Job Summary
Licensed Mariner I is a manager on a vessel and shall be responsible for representing, enforcing and preserving Company interests, policies and procedures to the crew, clients, sub-contractors and duly authorized authorities. They are the acting management when Sr. Mariner Management is not present.
Principal Accountabilities
(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)
  • Ensures safe and efficient operation of the vessel including safe navigation and piloting of the vessel, the seaworthiness of the vessel, the safety of the crew and persons in addition to crew, protection of the environment, protection of the cargo or property of the charterer
  • May serve as the Officer in Charge of the Navigation Watch (OICNW), and assigns other qualified officers as the OICNW
  • Issue appropriate orders and instructions in a clear and simple manner
  • Verify specified requirements of the Safety, Code of Conduct, and Company policies are observed
  • Responsible to assist in maintaining required credentials appropriate for their vessel, route, and mission
  • Manage the balance of the vessel crew and assign duties of subordinates as required aboard the vessel
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to read and write English, as well as render, understand, and react to commands given in English
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures in the operation of a marina
  • Knowledge of navigation laws, local laws and ordinances pertaining to docks and harbors
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in marine work
  • Knowledge of tidal characteristics and how to handle shore front activities
  • Knowledge of waterfront first aid

Experience & Education

  • Minimum one (1) year experience on vessels of similar size, route and industrial mission in a position not lower than 1st Officer
  • Six (6) months as Mariner is preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • College degree in related field is preferred
  • Possess all valid credentials required by law for service as Lead Mariner on the route and class of vessel appointed to (Examples: Merchant Mariners Credential, TWIC Card, Medical Certificate, Radio Operator Licenses etc.) for 100 or 1600 T Vessels
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License
  • Possess a valid unlimited DPO certificate from a recognized issuing authority is highly preferred

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Must be able to stand, climb, stoop, crawl and kneel for long periods of time and endure working outside on a daily basis often in inclement weather
  • Must be prepared to be called out at all hours
  • Living and working conditions at the assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable
  • Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions
  • Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions
