IT Database Administrator / Developer (Azure) — Remote/Hybrid (Atlanta preferred)

Sparus Holdings is hiring an experienced IT Database Administrator / Developer to manage, secure, and optimize our database environment across cloud and on-prem platforms, with a strong emphasis on Microsoft Azure. In this role, you’ll partner with application, data/BI, and infrastructure/security teams to deliver reliable, high-performing, compliant data services—while also building and maintaining integration pipelines and automation.

Work Model: Remote or Hybrid (Atlanta area preferred)

Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday (on-call rotation and occasional after-hours maintenance expected)

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and manage Azure SQL Database (PaaS), Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs (IaaS)

  • Administer and optimize database platforms including Microsoft SQL Server, and exposure to Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Azure Cosmos DB

  • Configure Azure SQL capabilities such as elastic pools, failover groups, geo-replication, and maintenance policies

  • Monitor and improve performance using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Query Performance Insight (indexing, query tuning, capacity planning)

  • Build and maintain integration/ETL solutions using Azure Data Factory and Synapse pipelines; orchestrate workflows with Logic Apps

  • Automate deployments and database changes using ARM/Bicep templates, Azure CLI/PowerShell, and Azure DevOps CI/CD

  • Implement and enforce security controls including Azure RBAC, Entra ID (Azure AD) integration, TDE/Always Encrypted, auditing, and threat protection

  • Plan, implement, and routinely test backup/recovery and HA/DR strategies (including replication and failover)

  • Support database schema design, data modeling standards, migrations, data loads, and change management

  • Create and maintain runbooks, documentation, and operational standards; provide capacity/performance reporting

  • Participate in an on-call rotation and planned maintenance windows

What You Bring (Required)

  • 7+ years of experience in database administration/development (senior/principal level)

  • Strong SQL skills (ex: T-SQL, database scripting, optimization, indexing strategies)

  • Hands-on experience with Azure SQL Database and/or Azure SQL Managed Instance

  • Experience with performance tuning, troubleshooting, and production support

  • Experience with backup/recovery and high availability/disaster recovery concepts

  • Strong understanding of security best practices (access controls, encryption, auditing)

  • Ability to partner cross-functionally with engineering, data, security, and infrastructure teams

  • Excellent documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills

Nice to Have / Preferred

  • Experience with Azure Data Factory, Synapse pipelines, and Logic Apps

  • Familiarity with Azure Automation, Defender for Cloud, and IaC patterns (ARM/Bicep)

  • Scripting for automation: PowerShell, Bash, (Python a plus)

  • Familiarity with Azure Fabric

  • Familiarity with Domain-Driven Design (DDD)

  • Experience or exposure to Master Data Management (MDM)

  • Exposure to GCP/AWS database services

  • Knowledge of Windows/Linux server fundamentals, networking, and storage

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/IT (or equivalent experience)

  • Preferred certifications:

    • Microsoft DP-300 (Azure Database Administrator Associate)

    • AZ-900 (Azure Fundamentals)

    • DP-203 (Azure Data Engineer Associate) or equivalent

    • Other relevant certifications (Oracle, AWS Database Specialty, etc.) are a plus
