Description

The John Martinson Honors Program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track instructor (9-month academic term). We seek an educator with experience in student-centered, discussion-driven, interdisciplinary teaching who can contribute to a cohesive, developmental four-year honors curriculum. This position also plays a coordintating role in the program's assessment efforts and in the management of Suitable, the student engagement platform used across JMHP.

The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester, typically including first-year inquiry seminars and upper-division honors proseminars. In addition to teaching, the instructor will support program-wide assessment practices and help coordinate student engagement, reflection, and developmental opportunities through Suitable.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • teach a 2/2 load within the honors curriculum, including first-year seminars and upper-division proseminars
  • contribute to interdisciplinary, discussion-based courses that emphasize inquiry, integrative learning, and reflective practice
  • coordinate program-level assessment activities, including organizing data collection, aligning learning outcomes, and interpreting assessment results to support intentional program development
  • serve as the primary coordinator for the JMHP Suitable platform, including managing onboarding, promoting engagement opportunities, and interpreting platform data in support of student development
  • participate fully in program life, including collaborative initiatives, student engagement activities, and efforts that strengthen the John Martinson Honors Program community
  • contribute service to the program, school, and university as appropriate

Terms of Appointment
This is a full-time, non-tenure track, academic-year appointment with a standard teaching load of two courses per semester. Summer appointments may be available subject to funding and need. This is a three-year appointment, with the possibility of continuation, dependent on funding and performance reviews.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in a discipline represented within honors education. This may include the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, arts, education, or other interdisciplinary fields.
  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching with evidence of student-centered or discussion-based instructional approaches.
  • Ability to contribute to a cohesive, community-oriented honors environment that connects academic learning with broader developmental and co-curricular experiences.
  • Willingness to engage fully in program activities beyond the classroom, including collaborative initiatives, student engagement efforts, and program development.
  • Ability to work with basic educational data and digital tools, including comfort with spreadsheets, learning platforms, and organized data tracking.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of undergraduate teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching in an honors program or other high-impact learning environment.
  • Experience with curriculum design, reflective pedagogy, or developmental learning frameworks.
  • Interest in program-level assessment and willingness to learn and coordinate assessment processes.
  • Interest in learning and managing a student engagement platform (such as Suitable) or similar educational technologies.
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff, or student success units.
