Position Summary:
The role will assist Traylor Bros. Inc’s operating divisions in various strategic and operational initiatives as determined by the needs of the company and the interests of the candidate. Theintent of this internship is to expose the intern to real-time industry processes or business functions, and expose Traylor Bros. staff to current academic thinking to better align future college graduates with the needs of the heavy construction industry.
Assignment compensation, location, duration, and specific role will depend upon the candidate’s specific area of expertise and the candidate’s geographical preference. Assignment location may take place at one of Traylor’s many construction sites, one of our permanent office locations, or may involve a remote role, all subject to negotiation at the time of hire.
Potential Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Internships are expected to last approximately 8-12 weeks, coordinated with breaks in the academic year.
• Temporary housing and relocation assistance provided.
• Location, duration, and scope will vary based on project/company needs and the Academic Specialist’s interests.
Specialist Experience:
• Exposure to design and engineering support functions
• Experience with estimating, budgeting, and cost control processes
• Participation in project scheduling and planning activities
• Involvement in project documentation, reporting, and coordination
• Observation of field operations and construction site activities
• Exposure to safety, risk management, and compliance practices
• Experience with quality management processes and inspections
• Opportunities to explore construction technology and innovation initiatives.
Specific opportunities available in 2026:
• Involvement in significant mass concrete placement operations. Location Upper Michigan.
• Cable Stay Bridge superstructure erection. Location: Houston, Texas.
• Plate girder bridge launching process. Location Keni Peninsula, Alaska.
• Heavy Civil constructability and estimating processes. Location: California, Indiana, Louisiana, and Virginia.
• Segmental cast-in-place bridge planning. Location Tucson, AZ.
• Project startup and planning for soft ground EPB tunneling and frozen ground SEM excavations. Location NYC.
• Structural concrete placements, large diameter water pipe, and valve chamber construction. Location: Vancouver, BC.
Qualifications:
• Faculty appointment at an accredited college or university (engineering, construction management, or related discipline)
• Interest in building stronger industry–academic collaboration.
• Enthusiasm for bringing practical engineering and construction experience into the classroom.
• Availability for a full-time, immersive internship for the duration of the program
• Written support/approval from your home institution
• Comfort working in both office and field environments, including construction sites when needed.
Preferred background:
• Prior industry experience in engineering, construction, or infrastructure
• Experience teaching upper-level undergraduate or graduate coursework.
• Interest in workforce development, applied learning, or experiential education.
Physical Demands
• Travel will be required to attend training and meetings.
• Ability to sit or stand for the entire shift.
• Occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
• Ability to lift, frequently, at least 50 pounds.
• Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to speak, write, and understand English clearly.
