Essential Job Functions:
The Courtroom Clerk prepares for criminal and civil proceedings before a Judge by reviewing the pending cases, gathering and preparing any forms that will be needed and assembling the parties. The Clerk administers oaths, records witness names and exhibits, and prepares a detailed summary of the proceeding. The Courtroom Clerk works as a member of a team consisting of the Judge, Judicial Assistant, Law Clerk, and Deputy. The Clerk notifies the assignment office of future hearing dates and the current status of cases. The Courtroom Clerk remains up to date on the rules of procedure and local business practices and is able to apply this knowledge to make immediate, independent decisions. The Clerk accurately enters this detailed information into the case management system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensure efficient operation of the courtroom by calling each case on the record; administer oaths; record a synopsis of the proceedings; complete necessary forms; record witnesses and exhibits. Assist the judge in selecting, seating, and swearing a jury. Calculate and assess court costs when necessary.
Maintain detailed knowledge of the cases on the docket. Prepare the necessary forms for each case type in advance of court. Enter synopsis of proceeding in case management system, enter criminal dispositions and resulting sentences. Distribute forms to related agencies and parties.
Maintain custody of evidence and track its return to the parties and agencies. Gather parties for proceedings. Communicate with court scheduling office to keep cases flowing. Communicate with chambers to insure smooth operation of the courtroom.
Other tasks and duties as assigned by management.
Remain current on applicable statutes, rules, and judiciary procedures. Identify ways to further advance the mission and vision of the Judiciary in your daily work.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma (or GED equivalent).
Experience:
Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, Parole & Probation, legal or financial services.
Note:
A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal/ Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Court forms, practices, procedures, protocols, systems, and equipment required to support the specialized work of the assigned unit(s).
Legal terminology and court procedures.
Judicial policies, procedures, and forms.
Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Skill in:
Operation of computer terminals and related software.
Typing on a personal computer.
Managing priorities to meet critical deadlines while multitasking.
Problem solving.
Ability to:
Acquire knowledge of Maryland Judiciary procedures, rules, practices, regulations, and jurisdictional courts.
Make work decisions revolving around the interpretation of Md. Rules of Procedure, Annotated Code of Maryland and deciphering unclear sentences and judgments.
Apply job-related terminology, policies, procedures, regulations, and laws to define problems, collect data, establish facts, record data, appropriately complete forms, and provide information to customers.
Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
Multitask, adjust to situations quickly, set priorities, and handle pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Work within time constraints, meet fixed deadlines, and demonstrate good organizational skills.
Handle sensitive or difficult situations requiring discretion and confidentiality.
Understand and carry out complex verbal and written instructions.
Pay attention to detail.
Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Quickly assess and act upon potential emergency situations
Physical Requirements:
Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
