Essential Job Functions:
This position is primarily responsible for processing pre and post judgment civil filings in the Talbot County District Court. The Judiciary Clerk for the Civil department processes domestic violence and protective order filings. Acts as a cashier, accepting monies for fines, costs and fees. This position is considered essential personnel
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Review, accept and process all types of civil filings, which include but are not limited to, new cases, post-judgment actions, Landlord/Tenant filings, returns of service, liens, and record docket entries and dispositions in our case management system. Assist the public when filing Domestic Violence, Peace Orders and Emergency Evaluations, entering into the DV system and preparing paperwork for the courtroom and processing the orders after court. Work reports relating to civil cases and assist with Caseflow study, and any additional duties as assigned.
Accept monies for court fines, court costs and other fees. Close out and balance register drawer, perform daily reconciliation of cash drawer(s), and prepare bank deposit(s).
Provide customer service at the counter and assist customers and personnel from related agencies in person and on the telephone, providing information and requested forms.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma (or GED equivalent).
Experience:
One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations, or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
Note:
A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
General office practices, procedures, and equipment.
Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Skill in:
Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.
Typing on a personal computer.
Accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to:
Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.
Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
Physical Requirements:
Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Equipment, Machinery and Tools:
Computer to enter filings and documents, telephone to answer questions, date/time stamp to accept filings over the counter, postage meter, fax machine, photocopier to make copies, calculator for closing end of day, cash register and credit card terminal to accept and process payments.
Software and Computer Skills:
RCS/MDEC Cashiering System
Microsoft Office to access emails in Outlook.
MDEC/Odyssey to accept filings and update cases.
File & Serve accept electronic filings.
