JOB TYPE: Full-time
LOCATION: Fort Meade, MD 20755 US (Primary)
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Cyber Network Sensing & Test Engineer supports the testing, verification, and operational validation of Department of Defense (DoD) enterprise network sensing capabilities and integrated cybersecurity systems supporting DISA missions. This role focuses on validating sensor performance, network telemetry pipelines, detection fidelity, and interoperability across distributed, Linux-based, and security-restricted environments. The engineer works closely with DISA stakeholders, system integrators, and Government test organizations to ensure sensing platforms meet enterprise cybersecurity, performance, and operational requirements. Accessibility (Section 508) compliance is supported as part of overall system quality and delivery but is not the primary focus of the role.
Primary Responsibilities: Network Sensing & Operational Validation
- Execute integration, interoperability, and operational test events for enterprise network sensing capabilities supporting DISA-managed environments.
- Validate sensor outputs, packet capture data, and network telemetry including flow records, metadata, and logs (e.g., Zeek logs) used by DoD cyber defense operations.
- Perform throughput, latency, and stability testing to assess sensor performance under operational, stressed, and mission-representative conditions.
- Validate detection logic and analytic outputs, including assessment of false positives, false negatives, and detection gaps.
- Test end-to-end data flows from sensors through data brokers and into DISA enterprise monitoring and SIEM platforms.
- Support testing of IDS/IPS, network security monitoring, and telemetry pipelines within classified and security-constrained environments.
- Conduct regression testing to ensure system updates, patches, or configuration changes do not negatively impact sensing performance or detection accuracy.
Test Planning & Execution
- Support development of DISA-aligned test plans, test procedures, and detailed test documentation for sensing capabilities under development.
- Participate in Integration & Test Readiness Reviews (ITRR), System Requirements Reviews (SRR/SFR), and Design Reviews (PDR/CDR) in accordance with DoD and DISA engineering processes.
- Prepare test data, scripts, and environment configurations required for integration, performance, and operational test events.
- Develop and maintain automated and repeatable regression test capabilities aligned with DevSecOps and CI/CD pipelines.
- Document test results, discrepancies, severity levels, operational impact, and recommended corrective actions in approved tracking systems.
Verification, Validation & Test Authority Support
- Perform verification and validation (V&V) to confirm compliance with system, functional, cybersecurity, and operational requirements.
- Validate interoperability between sensors, cloud-hosted components, data brokers, and DISA enterprise services.
- Support Government IV&V activities, JITC coordination, and Operational Test (OT) events as required.
- Assist with documenting deficiencies, risk areas, and mitigation strategies in support of Authority to Operate (ATO) and operational acceptance.
Lab, Cloud & Operational Environment Testing
- Conduct testing in DISA lab environments, virtualized and cloud-hosted platforms, and operationally representative networks.
- Support installation, configuration, and testing of hardware sensors, virtual machines, sensing software, data brokers, and network components.
- Collaborate with engineers and cybersecurity personnel to troubleshoot, replicate, and resolve issues identified during testing.
- Provide test support during pilot deployments, sustainment releases, and fielded capability validation.
Accessibility Support (Section 508)
- Support Section 508 accessibility planning and testing to ensure applicable systems and documentation meet DoD accessibility requirements.
- Conduct accessibility evaluations using approved tools as required by DISA policy.
- Validate compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA and DoD Section 508 standards for applicable user interfaces and documentation.
- Document accessibility findings and verify remediation as part of overall system quality assurance.
Collaboration & Reporting
- Work closely with systems engineers, software developers, cybersecurity teams, and DISA PMO staff to ensure comprehensive test coverage.
- Provide timely issue tracking, severity assessments, and test status reporting to Government stakeholders.
- Support preparation of test briefs, readiness reviews, and Lessons Learned documentation for Government audiences.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Active DoD Secret clearance.
- Two to four (2–4) years of experience in software, systems, or cybersecurity testing.
- Experience testing cybersecurity tools, network sensors, or enterprise monitoring platforms.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, ports/protocols, packet flows, firewalls, routing).
- Experience with automated testing, scripting, or regression testing frameworks.
- Hands-on experience with tools such as ACAS, Nessus, Wireshark, Zeek, Splunk, or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with DoD systems, cyber defense operations, or RMF-related validation requirements.
- Knowledge of DevSecOps concepts, CI/CD pipelines, and automated test integration (preferred).
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to document complex test scenarios and results.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work in a collaborative engineering
