Essential Job Functions:
The Senior Judiciary Clerk process Child Support and Paternity cases from File & Serve, mail and counter, including new and existing cases for Calvert County Circuit Court. Enters motions, orders, answers, lines, etc. into MDEC software. Manage caseflow to direct cases to appropriate agencies, including State?s Attorney?s Office, Bureau of Support Enforcement, Magistrate, Judges, Assignment, Family Services, etc. Assist public with questions at counter and via telephone. Cashier operations: accept payments, court costs & fines, balance cash register drawer daily.
Prepares cases for daily court docket, manage exhibits, interact with Magistrate, Judges, attorneys and litigants during court hearings. Performs clerical courtroom duties, to include the comprehension and accurate detailing/recordation of Magistrate/Judge's final rulings. Performs post-hearing clerical duties, including entering dispositions, judgments, etc. as ordered by the court into case management system. Preparation of necessary paperwork for forwarding to appropriate parties and agencies. Preparation of cases for appellate courts. Performance of other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Enters new Child Support and Paternity cases received from File and Serve, over-the-counter, mail and drop box; Process pleadings, Motions and Orders via File and Serve or mail
Reviews docket and prepare for court. Perform Courtroom Clerk duties, to include preparation of docket sheets prior to/during/after court proceedings. Enter final rulings and perform post-hearing duties, including issuance of Body Attachments.
Assists the public and attorneys via phone and over-the-counter. Communicate with and provide assistance to Courthouse staff and other agencies, including State's Attorney's Office, Bureau of Support Enforcement and Sheriff's Office.
Performs cashiering duties, to include processing court costs, fines and balancing of cash drawer at conclusion of day; assist with mail delivery and file retrieval (offsite/archives); other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services
Note:
A bachelor's degree may substitute the required work experience
A Paralegal/associate's degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience
A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
General office practices, procedures and equipment
Standard legal forms and documents utilized in the Judiciary
Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Skill in:
Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently
Typing on a personal computer
Accuracy and attention to detail
Ability to:
Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computer, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copy machine, microfilm machine, cash register, scanner, fax machine, etc.
Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems
Communicate clearly, tactfully and effectively with Judges, the public, attorneys, police agencies and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing
Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations and procedures
Exercise tact, diplomacy and impartiality in dealing with the public, attorneys and law enforcement personnel
Apply various court procedures accurately and effectively for assigned courtroom in accordance with courtroom protocols
Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment
Use proper grammar, punctuation and spelling
Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law and/or regulation to a situation
Multitask, adjust to situations quickly, set priorities and handle pressure in a fast-paced environment
Pay attention to detail
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, superiors and/or the public
Utilize cash register and follow protocol on handling checks and cashiering process
Physical Requirements:
Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Computer Terminal/PC - data entry, access of files and information, producing paperwork/printing
Telephone - answer questions, exchange information
Copy Machine -make copies for clients and inter-office caseflow
Fax Machine, Mail Machine, Courtsmart Recording System, Typewriter, etc.
Desk Scanner: Scan documents
Software and Computer Skills:
File & Serve - Process new cases daily/work on motions and filings submitted by attorneys
Odyssey - Process cases daily, including courtroom processing
Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Edge, Papervision, Courtcall recording system
