Essential Job Functions:  

This position provides accurate and efficient customer service to the public and court related personnel in all areas of the Wicomico County District Court. Duties are to accurately answer inquiries, enter data/petitions and process documents primarily as it pertains to the peace orders, protective orders, emergency evaluations, extreme risk protective orders, and special proceeding cases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Receives filings of new domestic violence and peace order petitions over the counter, through File & Serve, and interim orders sent over from the Commissioner?s office. Enters petitions into the computer system and prepares necessary paperwork for the courtroom. Research additional cases for the courtroom. Sets hearing dates. Requests language interpreters for parties as needed. Prepares the dockets for the courtroom.

Copies and scans orders from the courtroom. True test and certify copies as necessary. Sends orders to law enforcement agencies for service. Coordinates with courtroom staff, bailiffs and law enforcement to ensure parties get proper paperwork and service of orders

Provides customer service at the counter and by phone. Enters service returns in DV office and Odyssey.

Coordinates with Self-Help Center, Life Crisis, Dept. of Social Services, State?s Attorney?s Office, Attorneys and Interpreters. Assists other courts with information pertaining to orders.

Monitors File & Serve, task manager and document queues. Enters new special proceeding cases, sets hearing dates, and sends out for service. Processes all motions regarding domestic violence, peace orders and special proceeding cases.

Provides back up to the civil department. Assists in processing civil filings when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience:

One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services

Note:

A bachelor's degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

General office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.

Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Skill in:

Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.

Typing on a personal computer. 

Accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to:

Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.

Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.

Understand District Court civil procedures, forms, and documents.

Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.

Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.

Maintain respectful, effective, and harmonious working relationships with office staff.

Be organized and efficient to prioritize work.

Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.

Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.

Consistently produce the volume of work assigned under normal circumstances.

Work through minor problems without seeking supervisory assistance.

Comply with Judiciary policies and be punctual for work.

Accept changes and adjustments to work assignments as necessary.

Learn other areas of court work (cross training) and assist where needed.

Multi-task in high pressure working environment and adjust work priorities as needed. 

Be flexible and work overtime if needed

Physical Requirements:

Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Equipment, Machinery and Tools:

Personal computer for data entry, emails, research information and produce documents.

Scanner to scan documents to events in the case.

Software and Computer Skills:

Odyssey, DV Office, Case Search, Connect, Microsoft, Task Manager, File & Serve, Outlook.
