PITT OHIO, a $900 million, high service, highly profitable, transportation solutions provider offering SUPPLY CHAIN, LTL and TRUCKLOAD services is seeking a Diesel Technician Apprentice at our Grove City, OH Terminal.

The Diesel Technician Apprentice role at PITT OHIO is a hands‑on, entry‑level position designed for individuals who are beginning their career in vehicle maintenance. No prior diesel or mechanical experience or education is required. Apprentices receive structured, on‑the‑job training from experienced technicians and supervisors while learning how to safely inspect, maintain, and repair fleet vehicles and equipment. This role is ideal for recent graduates, career changers, and anyone with mechanical curiosity and a strong desire to learn.


Responsibilities


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

As a Diesel Technician Apprentice, you will learn to:

Technical Development

  • Learn how to safely diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair fleet equipment under the guidance of senior technicians.
  • Assist with basic maintenance, tune‑ups, component repairs, and preventive services.
  • Learn to operate and inspect mechanical equipment to identify potential defects.
  • Support senior technicians in dismantling and reassembling components, following step‑by‑step training.
  • Learn how to use technical manuals and digital resources to follow proper repair procedures.
  • Develop familiarity with computer‑based diagnostic tools and repair order software.

Documentation & Workflow

  • Learn to accurately complete work orders and documentation for parts, labor, and inspection findings.
  • Assist in entering labor lines and parts into the repair order system.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and perform additional tasks as assigned.

Safety & Shop Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment at all times.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, broken tools, or missing supplies.
  • Follow all company policies, safety procedures, and ethical standards.

Qualifications


Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid state‑issued driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical exam and drug screen.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members.
  • Basic mechanical interest or aptitude and a willingness to learn.
  • Basic hand tools recommended (support or guidance may be provided).

Preferred but Not Required

  • CDL, ASE certifications, or state/federal inspection credentials (training support may be available).

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Apprentices will work in a hands-on shop environment and must be able to:

  • Work both indoors and outdoors, including in extreme weather conditions.
  • Lift or move up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Stand, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach for extended periods.
  • Work in environments with noise, fumes, odors, dust, and moving equipment.
  • Use tools and equipment requiring close visual acuity and manual dexterity.
  • Weekend, night hours, overtime, and minimal travel may occasionally be required.

Training & Advancement

Apprentices will receive structured mentorship and skill-building opportunities, including:

  • Progressive hands‑on training in diesel systems, brakes, electrical, hydraulics, and diagnostics
  • Exposure to shop safety practices and standard operating procedures
  • Guidance toward obtaining CDL, ASE, and inspection certifications
  • A clear development path toward Diesel Technician I, II, and higher‑level roles
