Surface Preparation Technologies, LLC (SPT), a Frontline Road Safety Group company, is a leader in highway safety with offices in PA, MN, and now TX. SPT is the nation's largest rumble strip contractor, combating drift-off and head-on highway crashes. Its sister companies provide other highway safety services including line striping, traffic control, and permanent signage.
In our time of growth, we are looking to add a full-time Jr. Estimator (on-site) located near Mechanicsburg, PA. Working under the leadership of the Estimating team, the Jr. Estimator will be responsible for analyzing construction projects and providing accurate cost estimates to ensure projects are completed within budgetary constraints. This role requires a blend an analytical skills, construction knowledge, and attention to detail to assess project requirements and determine the associated costs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review architectural plans, specifications, and related project documents to fully understand project scope and requirements.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings to clarify project details.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services using estimating software, historical data, and industry knowledge.
- Perform accurate quantity take-offs for all phases of construction.
- Solicit, review, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes for completeness and accuracy.
- Develop comprehensive bid proposals, including scope of work, pricing, assumptions, exclusions, and clarifications.
- Analyze competitive marketplaces on a national basis and develop strategies to generate winning bids.
- Conduct proactive outreach to current and potential customers to solicit feedback on bids.
- Manage customer concerns and questions.
- Coordinate timely bid submissions in accordance with project deadlines.
- Assist with value engineering initiatives to optimize costs while maintaining quality and functionality.
- Identify and communicate potential cost risks, savings opportunities, and budget impacts to management.
- Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams to ensure accurate and competitive bids.
- Participate in subcontractor negotiations as needed to clarify scope and pricing.
- Maintain organized and accurate records of all estimates, bids, correspondence, and supporting documentation.
- Generate reports summarizing bid results, cost variances, and estimating metrics for management review.
- Stay informed on industry trends, construction methodologies, and material pricing.
- Provide feedback and recommendations to improve estimating tools, processes, and overall departmental efficiency.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS/PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent work experience considered.
- 3–5 years of experience in construction estimating and preconstruction management.
- Experience with highway construction preferred.
- Understanding construction operations, road work procedures, and crew safety standards is preferred.
- Strong understanding of construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with field and office personnel.
- Excellent customer service communication and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel).
- Ability to analyze data, anticipate conflicts, and make quick, informed decisions.
- Must take the initiative to build work relationships with your team and external customers.
- Must conduct yourself in a manner promoting a professional atmosphere by being a team player, self-motivated, organized, and having a positive attitude.
