Med-Surgery - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26000070)
The Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is a world-renowned center for excellence in transplantation research and clinical care. We are seeking candidates for a postdoctoral associate position. The appointee should have a medical degree and/or a PhD, and should ideally have some experience in clinical medicine or surgery, as well as in medical research. Some basic surgical experience would be an advantage, but is not essential. The ideal candidate would plan to follow a career in academic medicine or surgery and, in preparation, looking to gain experience in laboratory research.
The work will entail the care of pigs and baboons undergoing organ transplantation (kidney, heart, or islet) transplantation. Some animals may receive immunosuppressive therapy. The appointee would be expected to assist in surgical procedures involving the animals and carry out postoperative care under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. In addition, the appointee will be expected to learn the immunological and other assays required for the experiments to assess the success of the transplants, and to carry them out under supervision. The appointee will be expected to maintain full records of all of the surgical procedures, the postoperative complications, and the results of the assays and other tests. He or she will contribute to the reporting of the experiments in manuscripts submitted to peer-reviewed journals and/or presented at local, national, or international surgical conferences. These anticipated duties and responsibilities may require the appointee to come into the research facility on weekends or other times when emergencies arise.
