Job Description
Headway Environmental is seeking a strategic and financially sophisticated Senior Project Manager to play a key leadership role in both project delivery and firm operations.
As a growing environmental consulting firm, we are strengthening our operational infrastructure to support continued expansion. This role blends advanced project management with operational oversight responsibilities, including financial performance monitoring, resource planning, and internal systems improvement.
The ideal candidate is not only an excellent project manager, but also someone who understands how project-level decisions impact firm-wide profitability, staffing strategy, and long-term growth.
This is a high-visibility leadership role within a small, cohesive team where operational excellence directly drives company success.

Responsibilities
  • Operational Leadership & Financial Oversight
    • Support firm-wide budget tracking, revenue forecasting, and financial performance monitoring.
    • Analyze project financials, utilization rates, and backlog to inform strategic decisions.
    • Prepare monthly financial summaries and performance reports for leadership.
    • Assist with margin management, cost control, and pricing strategies.
    • Help refine internal systems for project tracking, forecasting, and reporting.
    • Support resource planning and workload leveling across the team.
  • Project Management & Client Delivery
    • Lead complex environmental compliance, ecological restoration, watershed, and nature-based solutions projects.
    • Develop scopes, manage budgets, and oversee schedules and deliverables.
    • Ensure high-quality technical work that meets regulatory and client expectations.
    • Maintain strong client and agency relationships.
    • Monitor and proactively manage project profitability.
  • Team Leadership & Growth Support
    • Mentor project managers and junior staff.
    • Support recruiting, onboarding, and professional development efforts.
    • Identify operational efficiencies that enhance team productivity.
    • Contribute to strategic planning discussions related to firm growth.
  • Business Development Support
    • Assist with proposal development and pricing.
    • Support client relationship management.
Identify opportunities for repeat work and contract expansion.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, ecology, natural resources, environmental engineering, or related field (Master's preferred).
  • 5–7+ years of experience in environmental consulting and project management.
  • Demonstrated success managing project budgets and financial performance.
  • Experience supervising project teams.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks (NEPA, CWA, ESA, etc.).
  • Advanced Excel proficiency and comfort working with financial data.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in ecological restoration, watershed planning, or nature-based solutions.
  • Exposure to operational management, forecasting, or P&L reporting.
  • Experience with public-sector clients and grant-funded projects.
  • Professional certification (PE, PWS, PMP, CEP, etc.).
