Overview
Background
NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) provides the framework for all positioning activities in the Nation. The foundational elements of latitude, longitude, elevation, and shoreline information impact a wide range of important activities. NGS has the responsibility of surveying and/or reviewing the surveys of thousands of U.S. airports for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through the NGS Aeronautical Survey Program (ASP).
Position Description
Will work with NGS and FAA to understand their strategic goals and the relationships between the organizations to include regulations, specifications, and standards related to aeronautical surveys. Job duties include:
- Review and validate third-party airport survey data for accuracy, completeness and adherence to FAA standards.
- Document changes to runways and ensure the accuracy of airfields' geoid models.
- Responsible for processing field collected data and determining whether airfields meet necessary safety standards.
- Cross-reference field-collected survey data against FAA databases, GIS datasets, and legacy records to identify discrepancies.
- Interpret and apply FAA Advisory Circular 150/5300-18B specifications to determine the acceptability of submitted airport survey.
- Perform data reviews using GIS tools such as ArcGIS Pro and Google Earth Pro.
- Assist in developing strategic plans and concepts and keeps abreast of new technologies and methods.
- Support database improvements or modernization efforts related to airport survey data management.
- Collaborate with team members to improve data review workflows and processes.
- Become a recognized expert in the professional aeronautical survey community in methodologies, techniques, and GIS fields.
The salary for this position is approximately $50,000 - 80,000/year.
Work will be performed remotely and in-office to collaborate with colleagues. Approximately 50% telework permitted. Candidates should be within reasonable commuting distance to Silver Spring, MD.
Responsibilities
- Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics, Geodesy, GIS, related discipline, or equivalent.
1+ years of relevant experience conducting and reviewing airport surveys.
Experience using Esri ArcGIS Suite, Python and databases.
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with sensitive or classified data.
Be familiar with aeronautical survey methodologies, techniques, and GIS fields.
Must be a US Citizen or a Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.
