Description
Leidos’ Undersea Systems Division is seeking a skilled Mechanical Sea Test Technician to support maritime system assembly, fabrication, integration, and testing efforts in both laboratory and sea-test environments. This role works closely with project engineers to prepare, deploy, maintain, and recover specialized oceanographic and undersea equipment aboard small and large vessels.The ideal candidate is hands-on, mechanically inclined, organized, and comfortable operating in dynamic field and marine environments.

Work Environment & Schedule
This position requires a combination of laboratory, fabrication shop, dockside, and at-sea operational support. Candidates should be comfortable working in fast-paced technical environments with shifting priorities and mission-driven schedules. The work schedule is 9/80B, which includes every other Friday off. The work is on-site only.
Key Responsibilities:
Assembly & Fabrication
- Assemble and fabricate complex oceanographic and maritime systems from engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Interpret engineering prints, schematics, and configuration instructions.
- Document builds, modifications, and issues encountered during assembly activities.
- Perform basic mechanical fabrication including:
- Drilling
- Cutting
- Torquing
- Support welding and machining activities when applicable (preferred but not required).
Lab & Sea-Test Operations
- Transport, handle, and prepare equipment for laboratory and field testing.
- Assist with preparation and operation of specialized rigging and oceanographic deployment systems.
- Support deployment and recovery operations aboard small and large vessels.
- Coordinate with engineers and technical staff during test events.
- Maintain operational readiness of sea-test equipment and support infrastructure.
- Operate and maintain systems involving:
- Small engines
- Hydraulics
- Winches
- Capstans
Oceanographic Equipment Support
- Prepare and maintain specialty oceanographic systems and instrumentation.
- Support rigging setup and deployment line preparation.
- Assist with acoustic release systems and related subsea equipment (preferred experience).
Lab Maintenance & Readiness
- Maintain clean, organized, and mission-ready fabrication and assembly spaces.
- Ensure tooling, hardware, and infrastructure remain operational and properly maintained.
- Track and replace consumables, hardware, and maintenance items as required.
- Assist in preventative maintenance scheduling for critical systems including:
- Test laptops
- Cameras
- Acoustic release systems
Required Qualifications:
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
- HS Diploma or equivalent with minimum of 3 years of experience supporting:
- Oceanographic equipment
- Maritime systems
- Sea-testing operations
- Ability to read and interpret engineering documentation and assembly drawings.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting capability.
- Physical ability to:
- Navigate lab, office, and warehouse environments—including frequent movement around piers, docks, and facility spaces—with the ability to stoop, kneel, reach for extended periods, and transport objects weighing up to 50 lbs. across the facility.
- Use hands and fingers to precisely operate machinery, tools, and computer equipment.
- Climb ladders up to 20 ft and work comfortably in loud production environments, various temperatures, and inclement weather. This includes a willingness to work aboard marine vessels of various sizes, occasionally on an overnight basis.
- Willingness to travel occasionally in support of testing activities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification within 3 months.
- CAT 3 crane certification or ability to obtain certification within 3 months.
- Coxswain certification (preferred).
- Experience with:
- Acoustic release systems
- Marine rigging operations
- Hydraulic systems
- Oceanographic deployment equipment
- Welding and machining experience.
