Do you want to collaborate with scientists and engineers at a world-class federal R&D center for connected and automated vehicles? If so, you might be the perfect candidate for the R&D Engineering internship at Leidos.
As an AWS Cloud Engineering Intern, you will support the team in consolidating multiple AWS accounts into a single, centralized account while ensuring minimal downtime and seamless migration of all services. This role involves hands-on learning in cloud infrastructure management, migration strategies, and best practices for AWS environments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assist in assessing and inventorying resources across multiple AWS accounts, including EC2 instances, S3 buckets, VPCs, IAM roles, databases (e.g., RDS, DynamoDB), and other services to identify dependencies and migration requirements.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to develop and execute migration plans, using tools like AWS Migration Hub, AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), or AWS Server Migration Service (SMS) to transfer resources with zero or minimal disruption.
- Implement automation scripts and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) templates (e.g., using AWS CloudFormation or Terraform) to replicate and deploy configurations in the target consolidated account.
- Monitor and test migrated services for functionality, performance, and security compliance, troubleshooting issues to ensure no data loss or service interruptions.
- Document migration processes, including steps taken, challenges encountered, and lessons learned, to create reusable guides for future consolidations.
- Participate in cost optimization analysis post-migration, identifying opportunities to reduce redundancy and leverage consolidated account benefits like AWS Organizations and consolidated billing.
- Support the setup of centralized governance, such as configuring AWS Organizations, Service Control Policies (SCPs), and cross-account access to maintain security and compliance during and after consolidation.
- Work in an agile team environment, attending daily stand-ups, providing status updates, and contributing to risk assessments to minimize downtime.
This internship provides exposure to real-world cloud engineering projects and mentorship from experienced AWS professionals.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's program in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of AWS core services, including EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS, and Lambda; AWS certifications like AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Developer Associate are a plus but not required.
- Familiarity with cloud migration concepts, such as lift-and-shift, re-platforming, or refactoring, and tools like AWS Migration Services.
- Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (e.g., Python, Bash, or PowerShell) for automation tasks.
- Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, such as AWS CloudFormation or Terraform, for managing cloud resources.
- Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail, especially in minimizing downtime and ensuring data integrity during migrations.
- Basic understanding of networking, security best practices (e.g., least privilege access, encryption), and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA if applicable).
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to document processes clearly and collaborate in a team setting.
- Prior internship or project experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) is advantageous, but enthusiasm for learning AWS technologies is essential.
This position is ideal for motivated students eager to gain practical experience in AWS cloud engineering and contribute to efficient, scalable infrastructure solutions. This position is for an initial period of 4 months.
