I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University School of Nursing is seeking a Manager, Research Projects for the ExPAND Project. The Project Manager for this multi-site research project funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has a pivotal role in coordinating and overseeing all aspects of the project across multiple sites across the US. The Project Manager works with the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator (at another university) to ensure that the project meets milestones on time, within budget, and meets all quality standards. This role requires strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders. The Project Manager reports to the Principal Investigator, supervises two data coordinators, and collaborates with multiple investigators, consultants and stakeholders.

The ExPAND Project, based in GW School of Nursing, is implementing a national five-year project to improve shared decision-making and patient choice for people with kidney failure. Project staff will work with approximately 25 kidney disease clinics across the country. Each clinic will sequentially implement two strategies for interrupting the powerful dialysis default, broadening patient treatment choices, and involving them in shared decision-making. Using a randomized stepped wedge design, participating nephrology organizations will be trained in educating and engaging their patients in shared decision-making from an expanded menu of treatment choices. After a period of implementing the engagement strategy, groups will add a systematic program of primary palliative care support for patients choosing alternatives to standard dialysis. Groups will be randomly assigned to the timing for beginning the primary palliative care program. The project team has investigators and faculty based in several universities. The team has extensive experience implementing innovation in kidney supportive care, advance care planning, communication skills training, and end-of-life care in multi-site, complex, pragmatic research projects.
