Essential Job Functions:  

This position is responsible for primary cashier duties in the court, to include operating the cash register on a production basis. The incumbent will ring all monies received from customers in all case types, collect trial payments, and receive counter payments. The incumbent will assist with Civil and Landlord/Tenant cases and assist the public at the counter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Utilize cash register to ring all monies due to the court for all case types:  traffic, criminal, and civil filings. This includes trial payments, mail payments, counter customer payments, and related filings.

Account for all monies collected daily by balancing the register at the end of the day.  Process and forward end of day/month reports to the proper departments.

Assist the public at the counter with general inquiries; fill in as an information clerk when needed; distribute forms; answer general routine questions regarding traffic, criminal and civil cases; give directions to other departments and agencies; answer and transfer telephone calls to proper departments.

Prepare Landlord Tenant filings for service and prepare the docket.  Accept filings through OFS.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience:

One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services

Note:

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience. 

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience. 

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

General knowledge of court proceedings. 

Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.

Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Skill in:

Organization and workload management.

Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.

Typing on a personal computer.

Accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to:

Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.

Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.

Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.

Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.

Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.

Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.

Multitask, adjust to situations quickly, set priorities, and handle pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Complete assigned duties within reasonable time frame. 

Account for all monies received via daily balancing of cash drawer.

Observe proper cash handling and deposit protocol.

Utilize District Court manuals to complete assignments and assist customers. 

Stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. 

Bend or stoop to file and retrieve documents and folders in lower cabinet drawers. 

Climb a ladder to retrieve or file documents and folders.

Physical Requirements:

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Equipment, Machinery and Tools:

Personal computer for data entry, e-mails, researching information and producing documents.

Computerized cash register to ring up all monies received by the court.

Calculator to add checks and money collected and complete end of day paperwork.

Printer to print documents for distribution to Judges, attorneys, local agencies, defendants and the general public. Print envelopes for mailing correspondence. Print label pages for case files. Print payment pages for District Court cashier.

Postage machine to apply postage to outgoing District Court mail.

Fax machine to send and receive documents from law enforcement agencies, detention facilities and other District Court locations.

Telephone to answer multiple phone lines. Make any necessary phone calls in regard to District Court matters.

Time/Date stamp machine to stamp all incoming District Court mail with current date/time as it is received.

Photocopier to make copies of documents

Software and Computer Skills:

Desktop computer to access various programs, including the District Court mainframe database, Word processing software, and Judiciary email/instant messaging. 

Cash register, cash register program, and register equipment to collect/process payments. 

Google Chrome/Microsoft Edge to access court forms and manuals.
