About Your Role

Kickstart your engineering career at the intersection of Android software and physical hardware! Clover is a global leader in point-of-sale (POS) platforms, powering millions of small businesses worldwide with smart terminals and integrated payment solutions.
We are looking for an Android Application Framework Developer - Device Engineering to join our Device Engineering team in Sunnyvale, CA. In this role, you won't just be building standard mobile screensyou will bridge the gap between high-level Android services and physical hardware peripherals (thermal printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, scales, and payment modules).
If you are a recent graduate or early-career engineer eager to dive deep into the Android OS, manage USB/network hardware protocols, and see your code drive physical smart terminal hardware used by millions of merchants daily, this is the team for you.

What You Will Do

  • Hardware-Connected Android Services: Develop Android application framework services and background daemons in Kotlin and Java that interface directly with external hardware and microcontrollers.
  • Peripheral SDK & Hardware Integration: Integrate third-party vendor SDKs and write communication pipelines for POS peripherals, including receipt printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, and weight scales.
  • USB & Network Protocol Management: Utilize Android USB Host (OTG) APIs to manage hardware attach/detach lifecycle events, configure dynamic USB permissions, and implement socket programming for network IP printers.
  • System & Device Troubleshooting: Use command-line tools (adb, Logcat, packet/serial sniffers) to isolate, reproduce, and debug hardware integration bugs and OS regressions across our terminal fleet.
  • AOSP & Platform Exposure: Collaborate with senior engineers to explore Android Open Source Project (AOSP) internals, framework extensions, and custom device services.
  • AI-Assisted Engineering: Leverage modern AI-assisted engineering tools (such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and coding agents) to accelerate development, refactor framework code, and optimize debugging workflows.

What You Need to Have

  • Education: Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), Computer Science, or a related discipline (Graduating seniors or recent grads welcome).
  • Hardware/Device Project Experience: Demonstrated classroom, capstone, research lab, or personal project experience building software that talks to physical devices or external hardware (e.g., IoT devices, Arduino/Raspberry Pi, robotics, microcontrollers, USB accessories, or sensor integration).
  • Core Languages: Strong foundational coding skills in Java or Kotlin, with working knowledge or academic exposure to C or C++.
  • Android Fundamentals: Practical understanding of native Android development fundamentals (Activities, Services, BroadcastReceivers, Intents, and background threading).
  • Networking & Hardware Protocols: Academic or practical familiarity with low-level communication concepts such as TCP/UDP socket programming, USB device communication (Host/OTG), or serial/UART protocols.
  • CS & Systems Foundations: Rock-solid grasp of core computer science fundamentals: Object-Oriented Design, Data Structures, Operating Systems (threading, processes, memory management), and Git version control.
  • Eagerness to Learn: High curiosity, passion for device hardware, and excitement to learn POS platform architecture and payment security standards.

Experience that would be great to have:

  • Familiarity with the Android USB Host API (android.hardware.usb) or managing hardware permissions and USB intent filters.
  • Coursework or project exposure to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) or building custom Android ROMs/firmware.
  • Hands-on experience integrating third-party vendor hardware SDKs or libraries.
  • Exposure to low-level microcontroller communication (SPI, I2C, UART) or embedded Linux environments.
