September 11th Victim Compensation Fund

 Medical Expert Team Paralegal Position

            The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) is seeking a paralegal for the VCF Medical Expert Team. The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) is a federally funded program that was established to compensate for physical harm or death caused by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, or the debris removal efforts in the immediate aftermath. The VCF was established to provide a no-fault alternative to lawsuits and is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice. The VCF provides compensation to individuals (or a personal representative of a deceased individual) who have been diagnosed with a 9/11-related physical illness. 

              The VCF Medical Expert Team (the MET), is comprised of a team of Nurse Attorneys and Registered Nurses who are medical and legal Subject Matter Experts (SME). The MET SMEs provide medical expertise to the claim processing attorneys, appeal team, and the VCF Leadership regarding a condition’s eligibility, severity, relationship to a victim’s disability or death, and whether medical expenses are eligible for reimbursement.

The MET seeks a paralegal to administer the MET workflow assignments, prep claims for substantive review, manage MET internal and external communications, manage MET productivity reporting, manage and update the MET intranet page, and provide administrative assistance with MET meetings, trainings, guidance document creation and revisions, transition to new technology platforms, and any other duties as the MET workflow evolves.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains MET SharePoint claims tracker database and/or Excel spreadsheet to include:
    • Data-entering all consult requests received by email.
    • Updating completed consults with date, or noting if consult is “On Hold” with reason for the hold, which includes other comments related to the consult.
    • Responding to questions from claim reviewers about consult status on tracker.
  • Prepares Basic/Private Physician/Extraordinary Circumstance/Medical Expense and other packets as required including organizing documents and forms. Notes basic claim information in a spreadsheet.
    • Reviews and organizes packets to ensure basic claim packet contains minimally required documentation. Following structured template, sends Missing Information requests.
    • For tracking purposes, assigns cases in the database to either the original reviewer or MET team.
    • Organizes claims files by removing duplicate documents, sorting them into chronological order, and merging documents into one PDF.
  • Assists with MET team communications to the World trade Center Health Program/ National Institute of Safety and Health points of contact.
    • Using basic template language may help draft email submit documents, or special requests for expedited claims.  
    • Batching and sending/assigning worksheets for verification of conditions.
    • Following-up on claims that have not received a response for verification after two weeks
    • Tracking all claims awaiting verification responses
  • Supports MET huddles and meetings including scheduling. Takes meeting notes and saves to SharePoint folder.
  • Assists MET team with preparing documents such as creating PowerPoint or written documents for internal training or SOPs based on materials provided by the MET manager.
  • May assist the MET team with onboarding and procedural training of new team members.

Qualifications:

Requires paralegal certificate, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.  One year of legal training or legal experience or at least two years of college education may be substituted for the paralegal certificate.  Additionally, at least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required.

Must be able to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for MRPT facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

Knowledge & Skills Needed

This position requires basic knowledge of administrative law, claim processing, and some knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.

The individual must have skill in using technology, Excel spreadsheets, adobe, word documents, PowerPoint, and SharePoint, have excellent communication skills, be highly organized, detail oriented, able to collaborate within and across small and large teams, and be able to pivot priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.  

*Employees will earn H&W dollars per eligible hour (including vacation and holiday up to 40 hours/week). H&W monies are used to offset the employer’s cost of benefits the employee elects into and/or utilizes. Any remaining health and welfare monies after all applicable deductions would be cashed out to the employee on a 1 pay period lag.

       

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.

       

Compensation Details:

$25.58
