Job Summary and Qualifications

Collects blood specimens using established laboratory techniques;utilizeskeyboard and computer for entering patient demographics and test and report inquiry. Ensuresaccuratespecimen processing tomaintainspecimen integrity. Performs registration procedures accurately and efficientlyin order toensure regulatory compliance. Performs various clerical duties. Obtains specimens from patients atoff sitefacilities.Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others to optimize job performance and foster working relationships.

Essential PositionFunctions :

• Maintains phlebotomy tray in a sanitary and properly supplied condition at alltimes.Test materials are properly prepared before each test; all necessary materials/supplies are available during thetest.

• PerformsvenipuncturesonInpatients,Outpatients,Emergencyroompatientsandnursinghomepatients.

• Correctlyidentifiespatients as per lab policy, askingpatientfor two identifiers when drawingblood.Patientisasked to spell their first and last name and theirDOB,andinpatientswrist band is checked to verify thepatientID.

• Performs venipunctureinan average time of 5 minutes with minimal trauma to neonatal, pediatric,adultand geriatric patients.

• Knowsall solutions used intubes, orknowswhere tolocateinformationregardingspecimen requirements andappropriatetubes.

• Draws blood following Standard Precautions and OSHA Regulations and properly disposes of needlesimmediatelyafteruse.

• Accurately labels tubes at the patient's sideimmediatelyafter a procedure is completed withappropriate information.

• Performs dispatch of specimens at offsite locations for courier transport to the Hospitallab.

• Demonstrates the ability to learn and apply newmethodologies.

Position Qualifications:

High School diplomapreferred. Medical terminologydesirable. General knowledge of phlebotomy terminology and good computer skills. Ability to review and understand department and Hospital manuals and proceduresin order toproperly carry out job duties. Clericalperception, attention to detail and finger dexterityrequiredtorapidly and accurately transcribe datafrom requisitions to the computer ordering system. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
