For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. Job Summary:

Provides clinical and administrative oversight of Psychiatric Emergency Services including daily operations, policy and procedure development and implementation and personnel supervision.  Reports to the Director of Behavioral Health.  Specific responsibilities include but are not restricted to:

  • Coordinates Psychiatric Emergency Services Program and daily operations for programs located within the Backus and Windham Hospital Emergency Departments while functioning in a leadership and resource role at all times.
  • Establishes and maintains positive and effective relationships within the Department of Psychiatry, within HHC, and with the community providers for optimal patient care.
  • Develops and implements Psychiatric Emergency Services policies and procedures (in collaboration with both Behavioral Health and Emergency Department leadership. and community facilities). Standardizes practices and procedures between campuses as related to patient assessment and care
  • Provides leadership and clinical supervision for Psychiatric Emergency Services staff at both Backus and Windham campuses, including staffing, scheduling, training, counseling/disciplinary actions and performance appraisals for 8-10 direct reports

Qualifications

  • Current CT clinical license - LCSW, LMFT, LPC, or Psychologist required
  • Master’s degree in mental health discipline (social work, psychology counseling, marriage & family therapy) required
  • At least 5 years’ psychotherapy experience with a minimum of 1 year in a supervisory capacity required
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Considerable decision-making authority concerning the daily activities of the work unit
  • Computer proficiency
