Overview

The purpose of the position is to provide a skilled research and engineering resource to design, develop, deploy, support, and integrate resources and services that reside on the cloud. The appointee needs to have a broad understanding of technology in order to anticipate customer needs, investigate alternatives, and synthesize and deliver unique solutions to advanced computing issues. Specifically, the appointee should have some knowledge of, and possibly specialize in, one or more of the areas below:

  • Architectural design, deployment, monitoring and operations of cloud resources (AWS, Azure);
  • System performance troubleshooting and optimization;
  • System administration for Windows and/or Linux servers;
  • Cyberinfrastructure planning and design.

In the rapidly evolving biomedical research landscape at OHSU, the appointee may be expected to handle one or more of the following:

  • Co-develop cloud architecture to support a novel tool-driven cloud platforms critical for data processing, standardization (making the data “FAIR”) and data dissemination including AI/ML functionality.
  • Demonstrate outstanding critical thinking and rapidly develop comprehensive understanding of stakeholder needs, working closely with project teams and providing critical input and insights.
  • Serve as critical liaison between the project teams and the cloud vendor, and offer process management essential to ensuring the project stays on track and identifying dependencies to support the project manager given the technical nuances and complexities across the board.
  • Assist with simple tasks including uploading data to the cloud and setting up data retrieval mechanisms.
  • Optimize the design and architecture before, during, or after service stack deployment on the cloud.
  • Collaborate with OHSU Cybersecurity to document and implement measures for cloud security.
  • Optimize the use of cloud resources, reduce business expenses and help projects scale rapidly and more seamlessly; Develop and test automations to improve efficiency and reduce errors.


Responsibilities

Education:

Master’s degree with major courses in relevant field plus 3 years related experience; OR

Bachelor's degree with major courses in field of research plus 5 years related experience; OR

7 or more years of progressively responsible experience in computer system architecture, design and support, preferably in a research environment. At least five years of the experience must be as described below; OR

Equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience:

  • Prior system administration experience.
  • Experience in computer system architecture, design and support.
  • Experience working in a complex environment with multiple platforms and protocols.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Broad understanding of multi-platform hardware, operating systems, applications, networks and programming.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Excellent technical problem solving ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and teamwork skills: ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems.

Qualifications

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior systems engineering experience with advanced computing services in a research environment.
  • Experience with large-scale data architecture and management, and advanced computing applications.
  • Experience supporting cloud offerings and services on AWS, Microsoft Azure; Kubernetes, OpenStack, etc.
  • Extensive experience with bash, PowerShell or other scripting language to enable use of SDK/CLI tools to power automation on the cloud. Some software development experience could be a bonus.
  • Experience using GitHub.

Preferred Job Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of healthcare, research and academic environments and applications.
  • Knowledge of HIPPA regulations and project management
  • Ability to use cloud SDK to develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) that provisions AWS and Azure resources, and to document gaps and use “click-ops” to handle those gaps. Prior IaC experience could be a bonus.
  • Experience and knowledge of AWS (EC2, S3, Control Tower, Landing Zone Accelerator) and Azure
  • Experience with cloud and object storage systems.
  • Software development skills: Bash, PowerShell, GitHub
  • Automated configuration management tools
  • System administration skills: LINUX, Windows, DNS, LDAP, TCP/IP.
