Overview

The salary range for this position is $32.00 - $39.32 per hour depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

This position is filled on an on-call, as-needed basis with no set schedule or guaranteed number of hours.

KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university’s educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.

This Freelance Podcast Editor (Bi-lingual) will play a critical role in helping create compelling stories while maintaining a high degree of journalistic integrity through content editing and script writing. With the passion for storytelling and a commitment to amplifying diverse voices and perspectives, this position will help producers plan and develop story lines and story arcs across episodes and seasons and understand the importance that the podcast content resonates with our diverse audience across the border region.

Responsibilities include editing new and existing podcasts and special projects, providing revisions on episodes, giving feedback on rough mixes and scripts, and reviewing final mixes to ensure podcasts meet both creative and journalistic expectations.

Responsibilities

Editing 80%

  • Review rough cuts and edit podcast episodes in both English and Spanish for the KPBS arts and culture podcast ‘Port of Entry’
  • Ensure that podcast content reflects the unique cultural perspectives and voices of the San Diego and Tijuana border region
  • Collaborate with podcast hosts, producers, and contributors to develop compelling storylines and content ideas
  • Provide feedback and guidance to podcast hosts and contributors to improve their delivery and storytelling.
  • Suggest improvements to story structure and script and work with teams to implement changes
  • Ensure accuracy and cultural sensitivity in all podcast content, including proper pronunciation of names and terms.
  • Manage workflow efficiently to meet project deadlines and maintain consistent quality standards.
  • Assist in translations of content in both English and Spanish.

Research 15%

  • Conduct research on relevant topics related to San Diego and Tijuana arts and culture to inform content creation.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends and developments in podcasting and media production.
  • Find ways to ensure and enhance clarity, flow and engagement across podcasts

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrated editing skills with a keen understanding of narrative storytelling
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish.
  • Demonstrated experience in broadcast and online writing and editing.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to maintain consistency in tone, style, and messaging across different podcast episodes with attention to detail
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with podcast hosting platforms and distribution channels.
  • Knowledge of audio production techniques, including sound design and mixing.
  • Knowledge of audio editing software such as Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, or Audacity.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field ( journalism, communications, media studies)jor additional experience be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis

Minimum Experience

  • Three to five years of full-time professional, proven experience as a podcast content editor, or progressively responsible journalism experience, or experience in a comparable position as a copy editor, an assignment editor, producer or line editor, with experience managing producers or journalists with a portfolio demonstrating content editing proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills

  • Lived experience in San Diego and Tijuana, along with a deep familiarity with the arts and culture scenes including local artists, venues, events, and trends, in both cities
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish, with strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages.
  • Experience working in public media or with nonprofit organizations focused on community engagement.
  • Active engagement in San Diego and Tijuana cultural communities and networks.
  • Deep understanding of the cultural nuances and dynamics of both San Diego and Tijuana
