Summary: Demonstrates an advanced knowledge level in all areas of surveying. Contributes to the overall success of projects by making exact measurements and working from engineering plans to establish lines and grades. Provides data relevant to the location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features for construction purposes. Inspects work in progress to ensure that it meets plans and specifications.



Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Serves as the primary resource for accuracy of the field engineering work.
  • Reads and understands project plans and specifications completely.
  • Supervises, trains and coaches the Assistant Surveyor
  • Operates surveying equipment, including Trimble GPS unit; demonstrates working knowledge of the Optical level, including both Linker and Philadelphia rods; operates Trimble total station layout systems.
  • Works from engineering plans to establish lines and grades for construction purposes; keeps engineering notes and records of data secured, including supervising and maintaining an accurate Surveyor’s Log for each jobsite.
  • Creates cut sheets for street, sewer, water and storm drainage systems.
  • Imports and exports CAD files; generates and publishes plan drawings/exhibits for grade and layout reference.
  • Computes cross sections of work performed for cost or payment purposes; performs quantity take-offs and as-built documentation for project management and estimating reference.
  • Turns in all required paperwork to the office in a timely manner including timesheets, request for time off forms, write up forms, evaluations, accident reports and any changes in the crews.
  • Attends morning meetings held at the home office as scheduled or as needed.
  • Prepares a 1-week forward view schedule and submits every week
  • Maintains a professional working relationship with Inspectors, sub-contractors, vendors and fellow employees.
  • Supervises and maintains a clean, neat, and organized survey fleet; supervises all survey equipment and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Skills/Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Five years related experience and /or training.
  • Valid Texas Drivers License.
  • Licenses and certifications preferred: Certified Survey Technician (CST), First Aid and CPR
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish);
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel applications;
  • Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence.
  • Demonstrates the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively present in small group presentations with customers, clients and employees.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment in resolving matters of significant scope and complexity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to influence others.
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency in responding to all situations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively schedule work and resources.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize assigned work and complete in a timely manner, including strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to think ahead and effectively communicate/plan work schedules.
  • Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Demonstrates responsibility in reporting to work on a consistent and timely basis.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • This position exists within a heavy construction environment, including hot, noisy, and wet conditions.
  • This position requires constant walking throughout jobsites, lifting and carrying tools and equipment exceeding 50 pounds.
  • Safety toe shoes are required, and other personal protective equipment may be required depending on work assignments.
  • Work in the construction area poses significantly greater risk due to moving construction equipment and active construction zones with trip and fall hazards.
  • The office environment is a low to medium risk area.
  • Driving a vehicle is required.
  • The Survey Manager will spend time both on the physical jobsite and in the office.
  • The office environment is a low to medium risk area.
  • Computers and phones are constantly in use
