Research Scientist

Job Summary

Conducts independent scientific research projects from inception to presentation. Prepares and crafts various documentations of research results into manuscripts, proposals, grant applications, and presentations. Trains undergraduates and research technicians. Manages laboratory policies and coordinates project development in collaboration with other specialists.

Essential Functions

The position requires developing and implementing advanced genetic technologies to assess the impact of genetic variants and to measure protein interactions. The position will entail development and validation of scalable assays for either/both variant impact and protein interactions, which may use both human cell and yeast models. Multiplexing of these assays will proceed by application of various means of screening/selection, e.g. competitive growth or fluorescence-activated cell-sorting, and read-out via modern sequencing technologies. The role will also require the demonstrated ability to both use and develop experimental and computational tools for the support and analysis of large scale mutagenesis, sequencing-based multiplexed readout of variant functional or interaction assays, and dissemination and analysis of the resulting maps. Downstream analysis will include analysis of the relationship between variant functions and interactions with protein or RNA structure, and with yeast or human phenotypes. The role will also involve experimental and computational support and guidance for other ongoing projects in the lab. The incumbent will be expected to perform research with a high degree of independence, and research supervision of students or other trainees. The role will further require leadership in preparing funding applications and communication and coordination with the PI, collaborators and funders, and in developing manuscripts and presenting the lab's research at local, national, and international conferences.

Physical Effort

• Physical effort associated with wet lab work, i.e. standing while conducting experiments, sitting while working on computer, walking back and forth in the lab to sinks and microscopes, lifting packages less than 20lbs., etc.
